Willy Korn makes debut, NGU loses

Korn makes a handoff in NGU's loss to Mars Hill

Trailing 30-15 late in the third quarter, the North Greenville Crusaders mounted a furious comeback and tied the game 30-30 with 8:34 to play, but Mars Hill scored on a fourth and one play with 1:41 left to win 36-30 at Meares Stadium.

Willy Korn, the Clemson and Byrnes High School veteran, made his North Greenville debut with 2:24 left in the second quarter, and ran for seven yards on his first play. He then hit Wright for 13 yards and moved the Crusaders to the Mars Hill seven before the Lion defense forced a field goal, which freshman Trey Walpole missed wide right from 27 yards out.

Korn tried to rally the Crusaders on the final drive, but Mars Hill stopped the final drive on fourth and two with 27 seconds left.

Lewis and Korn both passed for 94 yards (Lewis 6-11 and Korn 8-14) for a total of 188 yards for NGU. The ‘Jamey Gang’ of freshman running backs stunned Mars Hill’s defense for a two year season high of 217 yards. Rucker led with 85 yards on 10 carries, Anderson had 40 on 6 carries, Marcus Wilson had 28 yards on 14 carries, Reggie Lewis had 32 yards and sophomore Justin Beasley had 25.

An emotional Jamey Chadwell knew that his team had a chance to win the game. “I can’t say enough about the effort of our guys gave us. They fought hard and it hurts me because we had a chance to win the game at the end. We had a couple of mistakes on our kicking game early and got in a hole. But we got backed up early and had lousy field position and with a young quarterback, we made put the ball on the ground. But, we got a touchdown and got something and missed a field goal that might have made it 23-10 at halftime. We did move the ball up and down the field in the second half.”

Korn finds another new home…North Greenville

Willy Korn at NGC practice

Declaring he’s ready to get back closer to home and have some fun on the football field, Former Clemson University and Byrnes High School quarterback Willy Korn has enrolled at North Greenville University and participated in his first workout with Coach Jamey Chadwell and the Crusaders Tuesday morning.

Korn, a native of Lyman, SC who led Byrnes to South Carolina AAAA state championships in 2004 and 2005, started his college career at Clemson in the spring of 2007 and spent two years with the Tigers. After a shoulder injury forced him to the sidelines, Korn transferred to Marshall University in West Virginia last year. He decided to come back to South Carolina and contacted Chadwell about the opportunity to compete for the NCAA Division II Crusaders immediately. Tigerville and North Greenville are 25 minutes from his hometown of Lyman.

A highly touted Division I prospect out of high school, Korn is expected to compete for NGU’s starting position right away due to injuries to the Crusaders top two quarterbacks last spring.

North Greenville, which completed its two a day workouts Tuesday morning, will conduct a walk through session at 5:00 p.m. today. The Crusaders open the 2010 season Saturday Aug. 28 at Mars Hill College at 1:30 p.m. NGU opens its home season Saturday Sept. 18 hosting Lenoir Rhyne at 7:00 p.m. at Younts Stadium.

Swinney expects Parker and McDaniel to return

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is going to have to wait until June to know if he’ll have his starting quarterback back next season. Kyle Parker is only a red-shirt sophomore but he’s a draft eligible baseball player and he’s projected as one of the top 100 prospects heading into his junior season with the Tigers baseball team. If Parker opts for baseball that could leave Swinney thin at quarterback. Willy Korn is transferring after he graduates in May which means without Parker Michael Wade is the only quarterback that has ever taken a snap in a game.  Wade has never taken a meaningful snap.

Tajh Boyd  is the obvious heir apparent to the quarterback throne. He redshirted this year and he certainly passes the eye test. Like all quarterbacks that have never played a down, he’s a favorite among the fans. Fans always love the guy that doesn’t play because he never makes a mistake. It is always tough starting a guy a quarterback that has never played a down but the redshirt year is crucial. Parker had never taken a live snap until this season and it worked out pretty well. It is a lot easier to find cases of redshirt freshman quarterbacks playing well than it is true freshman stepping in and leading teams successfully. The redshirt year is crucial.

Again, all this is moot if Parker returns, which he very well may. I guess Clemson fans will just have to hope Parker misses a lot of curve balls this Spring. Die hard Tiger football fans may actually cheer when Parker strikes out this baseball season. Obviously, that’s not likely but it is a conundrum indeed.

Swinney is also going to have to wait and see what junior safety DeAndre McDaniel decides to do in regards to the NFL draft. McDaniel has filed paperwork to see what round he would be projected. He says he will only leave if that information slots him in the first round. Swinney expects McDaniel back for his final year.

Juniors Jarvis Jenkins and Chris Hairston have also filed NFL draft paperwork but they are both expected to be back for their senior seasons.

Clemson morning practice report

Clemson had its second day of two-a-day practices on Wednesday. The Tigers worked for two hours and 15 minutes in the morning and for an hour and a half in the evening.  Much of the day was spent reviewing the film from Tuesday’s scrimmage and correcting mistakes. Coach Dabo Swinney felt better about his team after watching the film on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

“We played better than I thought,” said Swinney. “I was very disappointed with the penalties (on offense) and a lack of attention to detail immediately after the scrimmage. And I still feel that way about those mistakes. But after watching the film we played better overall than I thought.
