Four former Clemson players open NBA training camp

Trevor Booker

First-round draft pick Trevor Booker headlines a group of four former Clemson players set to begin workouts in NBA training camps on Tuesday. Booker will be in camp for the Washington Wizards, while three former teammates have also been invited to work out for various teams. Vernon Hamilton is in camp for the Detroit Pistons, James Mays with the Golden State Warriors, and Raymond Sykes with the Portland Trailblazers.

Booker was the first senior chosen and the 23rd player selected overall in the June draft. He was initially drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but quickly traded to the Wizards on draft night. Booker was the seventh first-round selection in Clemson history, but the program’s first since Sharone Wright in 1994.

Booker was a first-team All-ACC selection this past season and concluded his career as a two-time All-ACC Defensive Team choice as well. He finished his career in the top five in Clemson history in points (1,725), rebounds (1,060) and blocked shots (249). Booker averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Wizards in the Las Vegas Summer League after he was drafted.

Hamilton has been invited to an NBA training camp for the second time in three seasons. In 2008, he camped with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He is Clemson’s all-time (271) and single-season (83) steals leader and was a four-year starter at point guard from 2003-07. He was named to the ACC’s All-Defensive Team in 2006.

Mays will also camp with an NBA team for the second time since his playing days at Clemson. He was a 2008 camp invitee with the Denver Nuggets, who then placed him in the NBA Development League franchise in Colorado. Mays was averaging a double-double with Colorado of the NBDL before an Achilles injury forced him out of basketball for a year. He played the 2009-10 season overseas, first in China and then Puerto Rico.

Sykes was in training camp last fall with the Phoenix Suns. He went on to average 10.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game for the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBDL in 2009-10. Sykes totaled 503 points and played 124 games for the Tiger program from 2005-09.

Booker earns his degree at Clemson

Trevor Booker

Washington Wizards forward and former Clemson standout Trevor Booker will earn his undergraduate degree in parks, recreation and tourism management on Saturday.  The first-team All-ACC player will not be at the commencement ceremony, but his graduation gives the 2009-10 senior class a perfect graduation rate.

Karolis Petrukonis earned his degree in December, while David Potter graduated in May.

“This is one of the main reasons I wanted to come back to Clemson for my senior year,” Booker said.  “It means a lot to have a degree to fall back on if basketball doesn’t work out.”

It has been quite an all-around year for the 6-foot-7 native of Whitmire, SC.  He led the Tigers to their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009-10, only the second time in school history that has been achieved.  He was named first-team All-ACC at season’s end, becoming the first post player from Clemson named to the first team since Elden Campbell and Dale Davis in 1990.

He concluded his career third in Clemson history with 1,060 rebounds and fifth on the career charts with 1,725 points.  He played and started all 134 games of his career, a Clemson record.

We gave you a look at Trevor Booker’s solid start with the Wizards here yesterday and now we have a more in depth look at his numbers as well as a look at how some other former Tigers are doing this summer.  Hat tip to Phillip Sikes at Clemson for the information:

First-round draft pick Trevor Booker is among four former Clemson players on NBA summer league rosters this month. Booker, who was chosen with the 23rd overall selection by the Washington Wizards, is off to a good start with the 2-0 Washington Wizards in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Booker is 8-8 from the field in two games with the Wizards, averaging 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He also has averaged 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocked shots per game, both figures that rank among the top 20 of all players competing in Las Vegas.

In the Wizards’ first game against Golden State, he went for nine points on 4-4 field goals and added three rebounds and three steals. In the second game against the Los Angeles Clippers, he posted eight points and four rebounds. He delivered a steal and ran the length of the floor for a breakaway dunk, followed by an alley-oop dunk courtesy of No. 1 overall pick John Wall, both in the third quarter of the Wizards’ second game.

Booker off and running with Wizards summer team

Trevor Booker

Trevor Booker

Former Clemson standout Trevor Booker’s career with the Washington Wizards is underway.  Booker has started each of the team’s first two summer league games.

Booker’s debut was Sunday against Golden State.  He played 27 minutes in that game and scored nine points.  He grabbed three rebounds and had two blocks and three steals.  One the down side he finished with five fouls and turned the ball over three times.

Still, not too shabby for his first game with pro competition. Yes, I know it is summer league competition which is about 1/8 as good as what he will see during the regular season in the League.

Booker followed that debut game with a start against the Clippers last night.  He played 25 minutes in that game and scored eight points.  He also had four rebounds (two offensives and two defensive) one block and one steal.  He had three turnovers and two fouls.

If you want to follow Booker’s numbers during his summer league games you can do so here.  We will do our best to keep up with the players with state ties that have a shot to catch on with an NBA team.  Booker, being a first round draft pick, will certainly be on the Wizards squad this season.

Booker and Downey await tonight’s NBA draft

The NBA draft is tonight in New York.  Clemson forward Trevor Booker is probably the only player with state ties that has a legitimate shot of hearing his name called tonight.  Booker will more than likely be selected in the second round, although some people think he has a shot to slip into the first round.

None of the draft projections I have seen have listed Booker in the first round.  Then again, not many people expected Renaldo Balkman to go in the first round a few years ago either.

Devon Downey

Devon Downey

Former USC point guard Devon Downey would like to hear his name called tonight too.  Chances are he won’t be selected and that may not be a bad thing.

With only two rounds in the NBA draft, players selected in the latter part of the second round often have a hard time making the team.  Only first rounders are locks to get the coveted three year contract.  Early second rounders usually do O.K., but the middle to late second rounders often end up in the NBDL.

Rather than be selected late by a team that may not want him around long term  it may suit Downey better to find a good fit via free agency.  Certainly there will be teams willing to give him a shot.

Tonight’s draft is in New York and starts at 7:00.
