Steve Spurrier is ignoring the problems of Stephen Garcia

Stephen Garcia is suspended for another alcohol related issue

Steve Spurrier didn’t want to talk about Stephen Garcia Tuesday. He quickly mentioned his senior quarterback had been suspended for a week and tried to move on. When he was pressed about the issue, he walked away. I cannot recall one time in Spurrier’s tenure at USC when he just walked away from an interview. Not one.

The bottom line is Spurrier does not want to talk about the alleged incident in Atlanta involving Stephen Garcia the week of the bowl game. He doesn’t want to explain why he waited until now to suspend him or why he didn’t send him home after the infraction. Or why he wasn’t he benched. Or why the guy who was told he was on a zero tolerance policy will be allowed back on the team after another violation.

We know the answer. Garcia gives the Gamecocks the best chance to win the SEC next season and Spurrier isn’t going to sacrifice what could be his final chance at a conference title by booting Garcia from the team.

USC football coach Steve Spurrier signed a group of 26 prospects Wednesday.  One commitment, WR Damiere Byrd, is in Japan for a track meet and will be signing and faxing his LOI at his first opportunity.

These signees join the four who enrolled in school in January.  And the Gamecocks are leaving one spot open for DE Jadeveon Clowney should he decide to join them.

Flattened at The Dome again…USC falls to FSU 26-17

Marcus Lattimore lay motionless after taking big hit early in the first quarter

For the second time in the month of December, USC saw its hopes for a statement victory fizzle out in the Georgia Dome.  The Gamecocks lost big to Auburn in the SEC Championship game on December 4th, 56-17.  They were much more competitive in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl game Friday night falling to Florida State 26-17.

Five turnovers and a early game ending injury to star running back Marcus Lattimore spelled disaster for the Gamecocks who finish their sixth season under Steve Spurrier  with  a record of 9-5.  Their all time bowl record falls to 4-12.  They are 1-4 in bowl games under Spurrier with three straight losses.  The Seminoles wind up the season at 10-4 with their 24th bowl win.

Both teams lost key offense weapons to injury in the first half.  USC’s Marcus Lattimore suffered a severe cut to his chin and lower mouth after a pass reception on the Gamecocks’ first drive.  He was later taken to a nearby hospital for sutures.  FSU quarterback Christian Ponder sustained a concussion during a second quarter drive and was replaced for the rest of the game by EJ Manuel.
