He will replace Skip Holtz (former USC assistant), who left ECU last week to take the South Florida job.

McNeill played at East Carolina in the late 70’s and he also served as an assistant coach there. He has been the at Texas Tech since 2000. He worked under Mike Leach and has been the Red Raiders defensive coordinator since 2007. He also coached the team to a bowl win after Leach was fired last month.

Former Auburn coach Tommy Tubberville relieved McNeill of his duties when he was hired at Texas Tech earlier this month.

Former Clemson and USC assistant and current Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill was offered the Pirates job earlier this week, but he decided to turn it down and remain with the Blue Raiders.

Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stocktill turned down an offer to become East Carolina’s new coach. The ECU job would have been a step up for Stockstill, a former Clemson and USC assistant coach, in that it’s in a higher profile conference and would have paid more. But Stockstill made the decision to stay in Murfreesboro for the most unselfish of reasons…the good of his current program. In a text message, Stockstill wrote: “It was not the right thing to do to this university, these recruits and players with only two weeks left (before Signing Day).

It’s a refreshing approach from a coach who knows that he can still get to where he might eventually want to get to from where he’s at now without sacrificing his integrity for a few measly bucks.
