Clemson sent its seniors out in style Tuesday night. The Tigers beat Georgia Tech 91-80 in front of a packed house at Littlejohn Coliseum. The night began with Tigers coach Oliver Purnell crying as he honored Trevor Booker and David Potter in the pregame and ended with Booker and Potter walking off the court to a standing ovation from the appreciative fans.

This looked like it was going to be a tight game. It was tied at 41 with less than ten seconds to go before Clemson sophomore Andre Young hit a long three at the buzzer to give the Tigers a three point lead and momentum that they would not relinquish. Young’s 3 ball wasn’t as long as the one he hit at the end of the first half Sunday against Florida State, but it was just as important to triggering the Tigers to a win. They outscored the Yellow Jackets 47-39 in the second half.

You know it’s a good night when you score enough points to get the fans free tacos from a local eatery. That happened when the team hit the 82 point mark. They could have scored 100 if they would have done better than 15-32 from the free throw line. Really, the poor free throw shooting was the only downer on the stat sheet.

The overall biggest downer was Tanner Smith leaving the game with what appeared to be a right ankle injury. He didn’t return and was holding a crutch and in an walking boot when he left the arena. His status for Sunday’s game at Wake Forest is questionable at best.

This win all but locks the Tigers into the NCAA tournament. They are 21-8 and 9-6 in the conference and will be playing with house money Sunday at Wake. Of course a top four seed in the ACC tournament is still important and that can be clinched with a win over the Deacons. Also, with each win the Tiger seeding in the NCAA Tourney will surely improve.

Sunday’s game at Wake Forest will tip off at 6:00 in Winston-Salem.

Clemson gets key win vs FSU

Tigers pick up much needed win

Tigers pick up much needed win

The Clemson basketball team needed a win against Florida State and that is exactly what they got in Wednesday night’s 77-67 at Littlejohn Coliseum. The win gets the Tigers back to .500 in the ACC and keeps them in the NCAA tournament discussion.

Clemson coach Oliver Purnell

Clemson took control early, jumping out to a 9-0 lead and they never looked back from there. Florida State did cut into that lead but the Tigers managed to maintain control and momentum for pretty much the entire game. The Seminoles never had a lead in the game.

Career high 19 points for Young

Career high 19 points for Young

Clemson went into the locker room with a 37-24 lead in large part because of the play of David Potter and Andre Young. The duo each hit three 3-pointers and each had 11 points at the break. The Tigers have struggled with their outside shooting the past few games so it was big that Potter and Young both came out with the hot hand. When those two started hitting big outside shots, you started to get the feeling it was going to be a good night for the Tigers.

Three players had career highs in points for the Tigers, Potter with 19 points, Young with 19 and Devin Booker with 14. Trevor Booker added 13 points. It was the kind of balanced scoring the team has been sorely lacking over the past few weeks. If the they can continue to get output from that cast of characters (aside from the elder Booker who you can bank on double digits points) the Tigers will have a chance to make some noise in what has become a very tight and congested ACC race.

The win improves Clemson’s record to 17-7 and 5-5 in the conference. Florida State now has the exact same record. The Tigers return to action Saturday at home against Miami. The Hurricanes are coming off a two point win over 20th ranked Georgia Tech.

Clemson broke a three game ACC losing streak Sunday afternoon at Littlejohn Coliseum with a hard fought 62-53  win over league leading Maryland.  The loss ends a four game winning streak for the Terps.  The Tigers led by seven at halftime and and pushed the lead to 11 within the first five minutes of the second half.  The Terps fought back and took their only lead of the second half at 48-46 on a layup by Eric Hayes with 7:03 to play.  Clemson led by one with 3:23 to play when Trevor Booker hit his first three pointer in ACC competition this season.  That put the Tigers up by four and delivered the knockout punch to the Terps.

Both teams clamped down defensively and neither could get much of an offensive flow going for most of the game.  Clemson shot 32 percent for the game, the Terps 35 percent.  Clemson has not shot this poorly and won a game since the 1997 NCAA Tournament.  And Maryland had 26 turnovers to Clemson’s 21.

The Tigers won despite playing their second straight game without point guard Demontez Stitt who continued to rest his sprained foot.  And they won without a big offensive night from leading scorer Trevor Booker who was held to just ten  points though  he did snare 16 rebounds, one off his career high.   But junior forward Jerai Grant stepped up offensively  and recorded a career high 18 points while also grabbing a career high 12 rebounds.

The win is the 48th in ACC games for Oliver Purnell at Clemson moving him into second place in that category 11 behind Cliff Ellis.  The Tigers have now beaten Maryland in seven of their last nine meetings.  With the win the Tigers improve to 16-6 overall and 4-4 in the ACC.  Maryland falls to 14-6 overall and 4-2 in league play.  The Tigers are off until they play at Virginia Tech Saturday.
