Marcus Lattimore expects tough running day against Auburn

Marcus Lattimore might not have much room to run Saturday

Not many teams have had much luck shutting down USC freshman running back Marcus Lattimore this season.  He rolled up 182 yards rushing on Georgia, 93 on Alabama, 184 on Tennessee and 212 against Florida.

Then there is the Auburn game.  Lattimore had 14 carries for 33 yards and one touchdown.  He averaged just 2.4 yards per carry.  Last week Clemson focused on shutting Lattimore down and held the former Byrnes High star to 48 yards on 23 carries.  He did not score.

Marcus Lattimore shakes hands with Gamecock fans after Saturday's win

Lattimore’s three touchdowns give him 19 on the season.  He is one shy of the SEC freshman record set by Tennessee’s Reggie Cobb in 1987.

Lattimore also topped the 1,000 yard rushing mark Saturday.  He’s the first Gamecock top hit that mark since Derek Watson in the 2000 season.  He has 1,066 yards this season, which is the sixth best total for a freshman in SEC history.

I know there were some people that laughed a bit when I said last week that Lattimore could be one of the finalist for this year’s Heisman trophy.  His game Saturday keeps that possibilty very much in play.

Lattimore and the Gamecocks will play at Clemson Saturday night at 7:00.

USC trounces Troy 69-24 in record setting game

USC scored early, often and with east Saturday

17th ranked USC made it clear early that there was not going to be a letdown against Troy.  Fresh off an SEC East title clinching win over Florida last week, the Gamecocks scored 28 points in the first quarter, and 56 in the first half in a 69-24 route against Troy Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The 56 first half points were the most ever in USC’s history and the 62 points were the most in the Steve Spurrier era.  It’s the most points Carolina has scored in a game since it put 77 on the board against Kent State in 1995. The 93 total points made it the third highest scoring game in school history.
