A new low? Kiffin takes commit from 13-year-old

Lane Kiffin is known to be an aggressive recruiter. He is also known for his questionable recruiting tactics.  He’s got an impressive resume’ of shady recruiting ploys but his latest move my top them all.

Kiffin  just wrapped up his 2010 signing class and now he is working on future classes. Make that distant future. Kiffin has accepted the commitment of a 13 year old quarterback for the Trojans class of 2015. This is an unprecedented move in college football recruiting.

Davis Sills, out of Bear Delaware, is still a few years away from being old enough to drive a car and he still hasn’t taken pre-algebra, but he has a scholarship waiting for him at Southern Cal. Anyone out there looking for a sign that the apocalypse is around the corner? This could be it.

Here is the big question: Will Lane Kiffin still be the coach at Southern Cal in 2015? My guess is no. A more likely scenario is Southern Cal will be on probation by 2015 and Kiffin will be long gone.

Lane Kiffin at SEC Media Days

First year Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin was the final coach to address the media at the 2009 SEC Media Days in Hoover, AL.  Kiffin comes to Knoxville after an unsuccessful 20 game run as head coach of the Oakland Raiders during which he won just 5 games.  The Vols were 5-7 last season and 3-5 in the SEC.  There are 13 starters returning, 7 on offense and 5 on defense.  The Vols open the season September 5th at home against Western Kentucky.

Spurrier steals show at SEC meetings

Steve Spurrier
Steve Spurrier

USC beat writer Joe Person has some great stuff  from the SEC meetings taking place in Destin Florida this week.  Steve Spurrier following Lane Kiffin onto an elevator to let him and all the other coaches riding it that he never said Kiffin cheated? Wow.  They could honestly make a soap opera called “SEC Football” and it would be must see T.V.

Steve Spurrier has never been afraid to take a shot at Tennessee (think: “You can’t spell Citrus without ‘UT’”) and former Vols coach Phillip Fulmer was often the target of the Head Ball Coaches quips.  But you always got the feeling the Spurrier respected Fulmer and the Vol program.  Now, with Kiffin running the show at Rocky Top, I’m not so sure.

There is also a story out  about the fate of suspended Gamecock defensive back C.C. Whitlock and incoming freshman recruit Ben Axon.  Both have been arrested in the past week.  Whitlock for trespassing at a night club near his hometown of Chester.  Axon for possesion of marijuana with intent to distribute

Looks like Spurrier is going to take a few days before he decides what to do with both players which could be good news for the players.  I compare it to a jury when someone is on trial.  The longer they deliberate, the better chance they have of getting a lesser verdict, or in this case not getting kicked out of the program.

I don’t think either player is out of the woods.  In fact, I’d say there is a better than slim chance that neither are with the team when camp opens.  Honestly, how many more chances can Spurrier give Whitlock?

Saga of Lane Kiffin

I have a feeling this will be a long running feature. Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin has managed to ruffle more than a few feathers since he took over for Phil Fulmer. The list of people, schools and towns he has ticked off is pretty long. [Read more...]
