Another kick in the teeth for the Tigers…FSU 16-Clemson 13

Jamie Harper's heroics were not enough for the Tigers at Florida State

Dustin Hopkins booted a 55 yard FG as time expired to help Florida State defeat the Clemson Tigers 16-13 in front of 72,228 screaming fans on a cold night in Doak Campbell Stadium.

Time not only expired on this game for Clemson, but also on their chances of reaching a second consecutive ACC Championship game.  The Tigers dominated almost every statistical category for the night, but continued the trend of 2010, missed opportunities.  Whether it was missed field goals, costly turnovers, or timely penalties; the Tigers figured out a way to beat themselves.

Dabo Swinney and company on Textile Bowl win vs. Pack

Dabo Swinney pointed the Tigers back in the winning direction Saturday

Shortly after his team’s 14-13 win over 23rd ranked N.C. State Saturday Dabo Swinney told a group of reporters that there is no rule against winning ugly.  He said the team has played a lot better and lost.

Essentially, it wasn’t pretty, but Dabo will take it.

There aren’t pictures next to your record, just a column for wins and losses.  It wasn’t stylish, but Swinney and the Tigers ended up on the right side of the column Saturday.

Quarterbacks on everyone’s mind at Clemson

Kyle Parker expects to take most of the snaps Saturday against NC State (Photo: property SCRN)

Quarterbacks were the talk of the day Tuesday at Clemson.  Kyle Parker and Tajh Boyd of Clemson, and Russell Wilson of NC State.

Parker clearly remains Clemson’s starter though Boyd said yesterday he was told by Dabo Swinney he will play against NC State.   Parker was asked Tuesday his reaction to Boyd’s comments.

Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen, after not being much of a factor in the passing game the previous two games, bounced back with a 7 catch effort against Boston College last week.  Hopes to continue with the same kind of production this Saturday against a good NC State defense.

Tigers sticking to one game at a time approach

Clemson defense to face ACC's leading rusher this Saturday

After its 2-3 start, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was forced to adjust his team’s thinking from the big picture to the much smaller picture of the old “one game at a time” approach.  So far, it’s working.

The Tigers have won their last two games to keep alive their hopes for a second straight Atlantic Division title.  Swinney, in his conversations with the media, is identifying each game as a season into itself.  That approach has been adopted by his players as well.

In preparing for this week’s game at Boston College, the Tigers appear to be totally focused on the task at hand.  To the point that some weren’t even aware their next two opponents, NC State and Florida State, play each other Thursday night in Raleigh.
