Birthday boy Hinske leads Braves to win

Eric Hinske celebrated his birthday last night with a sixth inning homerun to help the Braves beat the Giants 3-2 at Turner Field.  The solo shot came off Giants ace Tim Lincecum and gave Atlanta its second straight win.

Jair Jurrgens pitched six solid innings to earn his fourth win of the season. The victory was extra special for Jurrjens because it came against the two-time reigning Cy Young winner.

Lincecum did strike out seven and take over the N.L. lead in strikeouts.  He’s confident the Giants can bounce back and do well the next three games in Atlanta.

Tonight the Braves will send Tommy Hanson to the mound to face the Giants Barry Zito.  First pitch is 7:35.

This and that…

As expected, Kris Medlin has a torn ligament in his pitching elbow.  It happened in the fifth inning of Wednesday night’s win against the Mets.  He’s been placed on the disabled list and he will probably need Tommy John surgery.  That procedure usually requires a full year of rehab.

The Phillies finished off a sweep of Florida last night.  They were the beneficiary of a controversial call that helped them hold on for a 5-4 win in Miami.  Philly has won 12 of its past 14 games and remains just two games behind Atlanta in the N.L. East standings.

Braves take down first place Padres 4-1

The Braves won a battle of first place teams against the Padres last night.  Jason Heyward had three hits and Matt Diaz homered for Atlanta in a 4-1 win at Turner field.

Jair Jurrjens pitched seven innings and struck out seven to earn the win on the mound.  He improved his record to 3-3 on this season and has been impressive since coming off the disabled list.  Right now everything seems to be going right for Jurrjens and his teammates.

Here’s some even better news for the Braves: The Phillies and Mets lost.  Again.  Those two teams recent slide is helping Atlanta pad its lead in the N.L. East standings.  The Braves have a 6 ½ game lead over the Mets and lead by seven games over the Phillies.

The Braves face the Padres again tonight in Atlanta. First pitch is at 7:10.
