Former Clemson stars Spiller and Ford in rare air

C.J. Spiller greets Clemson fans during the Maryland game this season

Clemson sports information director Tim Bourret  is one of the best in the business for many reasons, one of which is because he likes to pass along nuggets like this:

Former Clemson players Jacoby Ford and C.J. Spiller have both returned kickoffs for touchdowns this year.  Ford accomplished the feat for the Oakland Raiders against the Kansas City Chiefs this past Sunday and Spiller did it for the Buffalo Bills at the New England Patriots earlier this year.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ford and Spiller are just the second rookies from the same school to return a kickoff for a touchdown in the same year since the NFL merger in 1970.  The only other time it happened was in 2009 when former Abilene Christian players Bernard Scott and Johnny Knox accomplished the feat.

Bourrett is great at passing along tidbits like this, and it is always much appreciated.

Clemson football: five burning questions

Five questions for Clemson as the Tigers begin fall camp today:

How will the team survive post C.J. Spiller?

C.J. Spiller isn’t the kind of guy you replace.  He’s one of those guys that can do things not many other people on the field can.  That being said, Andre Ellington and  Jamie Harper are both very good backs and should be able to handle the load.  What Ellington and Harper don’t have is Spiller’s “homerun” ability.  Every time Spiller had the ball he was a threat to score.  That big play ability, especially on special teams, will be missed.

How good is the Clemson defense?

I think this defense it going to be very, very good.  Kevin Steele is in his second year running the unit and he has a lot of really good players to work with.  DeAndre McDaniel is one of the top defensive backs in the conference, Da’Quan Bowers could have a breakout type season and I also like guys like Rashard Hall, Brandon Maye, Jarvis Jenkins and Marcus Gilchrist a lot.  You never know how a unit is going to gel, but I would guess this Tiger defense finishes the season ranked as one of the best in the ACC.

Who is going to be the go-to wide receiver?

This is actually a really tough one.  We talked about losing C.J. Spiller, which is a huge loss for sure, but we also need not forget Jacoby Ford.  Ford’s speed enabled him to get behind defenses and make a lot of big catches for the Tigers.  Like Spiller, there really isn’t anyone on the roster that can duplicate the things he did.  Xavier Dye will have a chance to catch a lot of passes.  Terrence Ashe should get a lot of looks too.  My wildcard is redshirt freshman Bryce McNeal.  The word is the kid can really play. I know this is cheating since the question was about reciever, but I suspect tight end Dwayne Allen is going to be a big part of the offense this year.

What should we expect from Kyle Parker?

Kyle Parker told Dabo Swinney he didn’t come back to Clemson to lose.  He turned down a lot of cash to play another year of football, that’s for sure.  Parker did lose his two biggest weapons in Spiller and Ford and that is going to make life tougher.  He does have another year of experience under his belt and an offensive line that should be pretty darn good.   Outside of Florida State’s Christian Ponder I don’t think there is a better quarterback in the ACC.  Nothing seems to rattle Parker and his poise and raw talent combined with the year of experience should set him up for a solid season.

Will the Tigers repeat as Coastal Division champions?

Obviously getting Kyle Parker back enables us to even ask this question.  That salty defense is enough to make one give it serious thought too.  That being said, I am still taking Florida State.  The Seminoles are starting to resemble some of those really fast and athletic teams they used to have.  Clemson has what it takes to make another run, but the Noles are the team to beat.

Dabo Swinney pre USC presser

It is hard to believe but the biggest week of the college football season is here. 15th ranked Clemson will be in Columbia this weekend to face arch-rival USC for the 107th time. As anyone vaguely familiar with this series knows, the Tigers have had the better of this rivalry. Clemson leads the all-time series 65-37-4. They have won eight of the past ten meetings and nine of the past ten in Columbia. Last year, Dabo Swinney and the Tigers won 31-14 in Clemson.

A long run of ACC frustration ended for Clemson Saturday afternoon before the Tigers kicked off their game with Virginia.  When North Carolina beat Boston College, that made the Tigers ACC Atlantic Division champions, their first ACC title of any kind since 1991.  Then, the Tigers went out and made it a happy Senior Day for CJ Spiller, Jacoby Ford, Thomas Austin, Michael Palmer, Ricky Sapp and the others who would be playing their last game at Death Valley by rolling over Virginia 34-21.

The Cavaliers battled the Tigers nearly even in the first half trailing  just 24-21 at the break thanks to a 23 yard touchdown pass from Jameel Sewell to Mikell Simpson on the last play of the half.  But the Clemson defense rose to the occassion in the second half limiting the Cavaliers to just 40 yards over the final 30 minutes.  The Tigers sacked Virginia quarterbacks seven times in the second half.

Virginia finished with just 273 total yards while Clemson had 366.  While CJ Spiller was held in check (58 yards rushing, 39 yards receiving, 1 touchdown), receiver Jacoby Ford went basically unchecked by the Cavalier defense.  Ford had 6 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown, and he finished the day with 211 all purpose yards.

Spiller set another ACC record, this one for all purpose yards in a season, with 114 against the Cavaliers.    His total now stands at 2066 yards.  He’s also the only player in the country to score at least one touchdown in every game.  Spiller now has 6974 all purpose yards for his career and needs just 28 to become the fifth player in FBS history to reach 7000 yards.

Quarterback Kyle Parker continued to show his improvement.  He was 19-26 for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Parker has thrown for at least 230 yards in four games this season.  During the Tigers current six game winning streak, Parker has thrown 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

Clemson’s tight ends have 46 receptions this season after getting four against Virginia.  That ties the school single season record held by the 1970 team.  And the tight ends have seven touchdown catches, and that ties the single season record set in 1974.

Senior Kavell Connor, a Virginia native, had a career high 15 tackles to lead the defense.  Rennie Moore recorded two of the seven sacks.  Brandon Maye also had a big game with 12 tackles and 2 forced fumbles.  The Tigers allowed the Cavaliers across midfield just once in the second half, and that drive ended on downs at the Clemson 34.

The Tigers are now 8-3 overall and they finish 6-2 for the ACC campaign.  They will play at USC next Saturday with a 12:00 kickoff on ESPN.  The following Saturday  the Tigers will face Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship game in Tampa at 8:00 on ESPN.  That will be a rematch of the second game of the season, a 30-27 Tech win in Atlanta.

Dabo Swinney Tuesday Presser

Dabo Swinney

Dabo Swinney

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney sat down with the media Tuesday to preview this weekend’s game at N.C. State. We all took bets before Swinney started on how long he would talk today. Swinney is known to be a bit on the loquacious side so the over-under was set at 35 minutes. I took the over. I won. He went 44 minutes. I knew I was going to win at the beginning of the presser when Dabo started thanking the people that picked up the trash around the stadium after Saturday night’s game. Below you can hear every bit of Dabo’s comments and if time isn’t on your side we will have a condensed version on the show tonight and on SportsTalk Rewind here later.

As has been well documented Clemson is in great shape in the ACC Atlantic race heading into the weekend. If the Tigers win against NC State and Boston College loses to Maryland they will clinch the division. Clemson has won five straight games against the Pack, including the last two in Raleigh. The last time NC State won in this series, known by us longtime ACC followers as the “Textile Bowl”, was the 2003 game in Raleigh 17-15.

The Clemson offense has scored 38 points or more in each of their past four games. That is a school record. A big reason why the offense has been putting up the big numbers is the continued great play of C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford. Spiller had 312 yards of total offense last week and is still not completely healthy but he will play this weekend against the Pack.
