Tigers celebrate regional win on the field at Plainsman Park

Clemson outslugged Auburn Monday night 13-7 to win the regional at Plainsman Park and advance to the Super Regional for the second straight season.  The Tigers will face Alabama at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson.  The Crimson Tide defeated Georgia Tech in Atlanta Monday night 10-8.  The series will begin Saturday at 6:00 PM on ESPNU.  Game two will be Sunday at 7:00 PM on ESPN2.  And if necessary, the third game will be Monday at either 1:00 PM or 7:00 PM on ESPN2.

On a night with both coaches had to start seldom used pitchers, the expected offensive explosion was delivered.  The teams combined for 32 hits.  Clemson scored in every inning but three, and plated three runs in three different innings.

A three run seventh gave the Tigers and 11-6 lead and  the breathing room they needed for their depleted pitching corps.  Auburn scored a run in the bottom of the 7th but Clemson tacked on two insurance runs in the 9th on a double by Wilson Boyd.  Clemson turned two big double plays started by first baseman Richie Schaeffer to get out of trouble in the 7th and 8th innings.  Auburn left 12 runners on base for the game.

Auburn loaded the bases in the ninth on three straight singles off Kevin Brady after one out, but Brady got a strike out and a ground out to end the game and send the Tigers to the Super Regional.

Clemson and Auburn to settle regional Monday

Auburn staged a dramatic ninth inning rally Sunday night to defeat Clemson 11-10 and force a deciding game Monday night for the regional championship and a berth in the Super Regionals.

Auburn led 5-1 until Clemson scored seven runs in the 5th for an 8-5 lead.  Clemson led 9-8 going to the top of the ninth, and Tiger releiver Thomas Cruz retired the first two batters.  So, Clemson stood one out away from advancing.

But things started unraveling for Clemson when Cruz issued a two out walk on four pitches to Justin Bryant.  Then, perhaps the play of the game, and possibly the regional, occurred.  Facing an 0-2 count, Justin Fradejas popped up into short centerfield.  Clemson second baseman Mike Freeman backpedaled and appeared to be in position to make a play, but the ball bounced off the edge of his glove for a single.  With runners on first and third, Crede Simpson, a native of Auburn and a defensive replacement for centerfielder Trent Mummey in the 8th, ripped a 1-2 pitch from Cruz over the 385 foot sign in left centerfield for a three run homer.  That put Auburn up 11-9 going to the bottom of the ninth.

Clemson did try to stage its own rally.  Richie Schaffer led off with a single. Wilson Boyd followed with single with Schaffer stopping at second.  Spencer Kieboom sacrificed the runners to second and third.  Schaffer would score on a wild pitch and Boyd would take third.  After Addison Johnson grounded out to first for the second out, Mike Freeman walked giving the Tigers runners on first and third.  But Jeff Schaus popped up to second to end the game.

Clemson added two more runs in the fourth Richie Shaffer doubled off the mini-Monster in left and scored on Wilson Boyd’s double into the gap in left center field.  Boyd would score two batters later when Auburn third baseman Dan Gamache made a nice play on a hard hit ball by Will Lamb but threw wild to first.

Clemson lefthander Casey Harman retired eleven of the first thirteen batters he faced and did not give up a hit until the fifth when Tony Caldwell left off the inning with his 10th home run over the mini-Monster.  Auburn’s other run also came on a solo home over the wall in left by Hunter Morris to lead off the ninth.  It was his 22nd homer of the season.  Caldwell followed with a single but was wiped up by Clemson’s second double play of the night, and Harman got Casey McElroy to fly out to right to end the game.

It was the first complete game of Harman’s  career.  He allowed just five hits and struck out eight to improve to 7-2.  Grant Dayton took the loss to fall to 8-3.

Except for a dropped pop up by shortstop Brad Miller in the third, Clemson’s defense was again was stellar.  There were the two double plays, and in the sixth, with a runner on first and two outs, centerfielder Wilson Boyd made a spectacular catch against the wall in centerfield  to rob Brian Fletcher of extra bases and save a run.

Clemson is now 40-21 and one win away from advancing to a Super Regional for the second year in a row.   Will Lamb will start on the mound for Clemson Sunday night.

John Hinson opened the frame with his 13th homer of the center, a shot that carried over the right centerfield wall.  One out later, Wilson Boyd doubled to right and was replaced with pinch runner Addison Johnson.  Spencer Kieboom drew a walk and when the pitch went to the backstop, Johnson took third.  Will Lamb then singled to right off reliever Cody Schlagel who replaced starter Scott Copeland.  Mike Freeman walked to load the bases, and then Jeff Schaus ripped a single to right that scored two.  And he later scored on a two out signle by Brad Miller.

That was more than enough offense for Tiger starter Scott Weismann.  He pitched seven complete innings allowing just the one run and four hits while striking out six.  He was lifted after a half hour lightening delay after the seventh inning.  Scott Firth and Josh Thrailkill finished up.  Weismann improves to 7-2.

Lamb also homered for the Tigers in the 5th, part of a three for three day for him.  He also walked once.  The Tigers had 12 hits off of three Golden Eagle pitchers.  The Tigers were also flawless in the field going error free for the the second straight game.

The Tigers will start Scott Weismann on the mound against Southern Miss.  The sophomore righthander is 6-2 with a 5.47 ERA.  He is coming off a rough outing against Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament in which he lasted just three innings and allowed six runs.  But he was sharp in his start before that allowing just three runs in 6.1 innings in a win over Florida State.

Southern Miss will start senior righthander Seth Copeland.  He is 11-0 and won two games in the Conference USA Tournament, where he was named the tournament MVP.

Brad Miller will be  the starter at shortstop  for Clemson Friday.  He was pulled late in the season and used as the DH because of defensive issues, but he was back in the field for the last two gamesof the ACC Tournament.  But Leggett is undecided about his starting catcher because of the recent performance of Spencer Kieboom.  He or John Nester will start.  And the starting centerfielder will be either Wilson Boyd or Addison Johnson.
