Three TDs for Maddox

Three TDs for Maddox

USC broke open a close game with a 21 point third quarter and a shutout defensive effort in the second half in beating Florida Atlantic 38-16 in their home opener Saturday night in Columbia.  The Gamecocks led just 17-16 at halftime.  But an interception by freshman Stephon Gilmore on the Owls’ first play of the second half led to a three yard Brian Maddox touchdown run, and the Gamecocks were on their way to their second win of the season against one defeat.  The  Gamecocks rolled up 516 total yards including 287 yards on the ground.  For the first time since 2007, the Gamecocks had a 100 yard rusher (Jarvis Giles) and a 100 yard receiver (Tori Gurley) in the same game.  Eric Norwood recorded his 26th career sack to tie the school record owned by Andrew Province.  The Gamecocks will play host to Ole Miss Thursday night at 7:45 in an ESPN nationally televised game.

USC defeats NC State 7-3

USC scored a first quarterback touchdown and the Gamecock defense made that stand up on a night yards were hard to come by in a 7-3 win over NC State at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.  Brian Maddox scored on a one yard run with 9:10 to play in the first quarter capping a brief 14 yard drive set up by a fumble recovery by Darian Stewart.  That would be all the scoring for the Gamecocks who had a touchdown pass called back for offensive pass interference, blew a field goal attempt with a bad snap and missed a 27 yard field goal.  But the defense was up to the task limiting State to just 133 total yards.  In the two game series with the Wolfpack, the Gamecocks allowed just three points in winning both games.  The Gamecocks now lead the all time series 27-26-4.

Gamecock quarterback Stephen Garcia was 13-22 for 148 yards and one interception.  He was sacked three times, but he did lead the team on a critical time eating drive at the end of the game to run out the clock.

The Gamecocks finished with 108 net rushing yards out of 154 total rushing yards.  Brian Maddox led the way with 66 yards and the touchdown.

Eric Norwood had another big night with eight tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss.  The Gamecock defense totaled six sacks.  Shaq Wilson also had eight tackles while Devin Taylor, playing in his first game, had six tackles, a sack, three tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a blocked punt.

The Gamecocks did lose linebacker Rodney Paulk in the game to a torn ACL and the early indications were he will miss the season.  This after sitting out last season because of his knee.  His loss means more shifting on defense for coordinator Ellis Johnson.

The Gamecocks finished with just 256 total yards on 64 plays.  They had the one interception and allowed three sacks.  Quarterbacks coach GA Mangus knows without the defense, the game may very well have been lost.

USC’s Norwood on watch list

From USC Sports Information….

University of South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood has been named to the preseason Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List, it was announced today.

Norwood, a 6-1, 252-pounder from Acworth, Ga., was a consensus first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection in 2008 after finishing second on the squad with 75 tackles, including a teamleading 14.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks. He also led the team with nine quarterback hurries, while recovering two fumbles and forcing another. A 2007 first-team All-SEC selection by the SEC coaches and a 2006 Freshman All-American, Norwood is Carolina’s all-time leader with 43.0 career tackles for loss and is third on the school’s all-time list in sacks with 22.0. He is the SEC active leader in both categories. He has played in all 38 games over the past three seasons, making 25 consecutive starts for
the Gamecocks.

The Rotary Lombardi Award is presented annually by Houston’s Rotary Club to the nation’s top college football lineman — offense or defense — who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of Vince Lombardi. To be eligible, the player can be an offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, or tight end.

The Watch List for the 40th annual Lombardi Award was formed by using 2008 postseason and 2009 preseason all-conference and All-America teams. Additional nominations were accepted from Rotary Lombardi Award voters and college sports information directors.

On Oct. 14, the 12 semifinalists for the Rotary Lombardi Award will be announced. On Nov. 11, the four finalists will be named. All of the finalists will travel to Houston for the ceremony to announce the winner on Dec. 9 at the Hilton Americas.

Norwood is also on the Watch list for the Lott Trophy, the Bednarik Award and is a 2009 preseason first team All-SEC selection.

USC Monday practice report and audio

Report from USC sports information….

One day after going through a 100-play scrimmage in Williams-Brice Stadium, the University of South Carolina football team returned to the Bluff Road practice fields Monday night, just 17 days away from the start of the 2009 football opener at NC State. The Gamecocks practiced in shells on Monday.Much of Monday’s post-practice talk centered around the young wide receivers, who combined to log 13 of the 23 pass completions in Sunday’s scrimmage.

“Alshon Jeffrey made a couple of leaping catches, so he’s sort of proven to be a guy that you can throw the ball at,” said head coach Steve Spurrier following Monday’s workout. “We moved Tori Gurley up right now, so his first (team) split end at the X position. Moe Brown is doing well. Jason Barnes didn’t have his best scrimmage, but we know he can play. Joe Hills caught one or two here and there.  Alshon acts like he wants to play,” continued Coach Spurrier on the play of the true freshman.  “He had a good practice tonight.  He’s moving faster.  He listens to coaches.”

Senior linebacker Eric Norwood sat out Monday’s practice and will be sidelined for some time after injuring his right wrist in the scrimmage. “He’s going to be ok,” said Coach Spurrier. “He’s sort of got a cracked bone in his wrist, but it should be ok in a week or so. He’ll be held out of all contact (until the wrist heals).”

The squad will have their second and final two-a-day on Tuesday, with practices scheduled for 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Both practices will be closed.
