David Cutcliffe says don't be surprised if Duke surprises in the ACC

Duke key pre-season notes:

  • 17 starters return, 9 on offense and 6 on defense
  • Last year’s three conference wins were the most for Duke since 1999
  • Sophomore Sean Renfree replaces the graduated Thad Lewis at quarterback
  • Four starters on the offensive line return
  • Duke was 9th in total and scoring defense last season in the ACC

ACC Kickoff: Duke’s David Cutcliffe

Duke coach David Cutcliffe met with the media here at the ACC Football Kickoff to discuss the start of his second season in Durham. Cutcliffe’s team only four games last season and just one in the conference. He told the media today that he think the Blue Devils can win six or more games this season.Cutcliffe returns four starters on offense and three on defense. Duke does not play Clemson this year.

Clemson (39-18) is playing Duke (34-23) today in its second game at the ACC tournament here in Durham. The Tigers are starting freshman lefty Chris Dwyer on the mound. He’s 4-4 this season with a 5.03 ERA. The Blue Devils have their ace Andrew Wolcott on the mound. He’s 7-3 with a 2.79 ERA.

The Tigers lost their ACC tournament opener to Virginia Thursday night. Duke loss its opener Wednesday against North Carolina. The Tigers can still make it to the tournament championship but they will need some help. To make it to the title game the Tigers have to win today against Duke and tomorrow against North Carolina. And they need Virginia to lose tonight against North Carolina and tomorrow against Duke.
