Sports cartoon of the week: “Horntanic”

This was passed along by one of our listeners.  I thought it was worth sharing.   Not sure who created this gem but he or she did a nice job of summing up the state of USC basketball:

Don’t worry, Gamecock fans.  It’s all part of the process.  He’s building a program.

Ramon Galloway finds a new school

Ramon Galloway is heading to the Atlantic 10

Former USC guard Ramon Galloway is reportedly transferring to La Salle. The news was first reported in the Philadelphia Daily News.

Galloway averaged 10.7 points per game last season, the third highest average on the team. He was used mostly off the bench and started just four games.

Galloway announced last month his plans to leave the Gamecock program. His high school coach indicated Darrin Horn told Galloway he would most likely be the eighth or ninth go off the bench if he stayed for his junior season.

Galloway is a Philadelphia native. He will have to sit out one season before he is eligible to play.

Darrin Horn issues statement on Ellington

USC basketball coach Darrin Horn issued a statement Thursday night on the news freshman point guard Bruce Ellington will join the Gamecock football team this summer.

“To me the most rewarding thing in this job is the players and my relationship with them. From the first time I met Bruce I knew playing both sports in college was a possibility and we support him in every way we can. We hope he has a lot of success in football and look forward to having him back next year for basketball.”

Ellington led the Gamecock basketball team in scoring last season, averaging close to 13 points per game.  He is expected to play receiver and return kicks for the football team.

Galloway and Spinella leaving USC hoops

Ramon Galloway leaving after two years

USC basketball coach Darrin Horn announced today that sophomore guards Ramon Galloway and Stephen Spinella will not be back next season.

“As a staff we wish Ramon and Stephen the best in their futures, both as basketball players and young men,” Horn said. “We’re committed to helping both of them continue their basketball and academic careers. We appreciate what they brought to our program during their time at South Carolina.”

Galloway played in all 30 games for USC last season and started in four. He averaged 10.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assist per game. He played about 24 minutes per game. He averaged just over nine points per game over his two year career.

“I have enjoyed my two years here at the University of South Carolina,” Galloway said. “At this time I’m going to transfer to another university. I’m looking for a different opportunity and role. I would like to thank Coach Horn and wish him and the program the best.”

Spinella played in 15 games last season, most of which were early in the year. He averaged just 2.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in those games.

“I enjoyed the past two years here at South Carolina,” Spinella said. “I have decided to pursue other opportunities. I appreciate everything Coach Horn and the team have allowed me to accomplish. I wish the team the best of luck in the future.”

USC is coming off a 14-16 season. They finished 5-11 in the SEC.

Darrin Horn still optimistic about direction of program

USC basketball coach Darrin Horn met with the media today to put a wrap on his third season. For a second straight year the Gamecocks missed out on a postseason bid. The team finished this season with a 14-16 record and lost nine of 10 to close out the season.

Horn acknowledged he knows the team must show improvement next season but he stopped short of saying it had to make the postseason. Horn is 50-42 in his three seasons at USC. His best year came in his first, a 21-10 team that was eliminated in the first round of the NIT.
