DeAndre Hopkins excited to make transition to basketball

DeAndre Hopkins hopes to become a two sport star at Clemson

This time next week Clemson wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins will have traded in his helmet and pads for a pair of shorts and sneakers.  After the Tigers wrap up the Meineke Car Care Bowl Friday Hopkins will join the basketball team.  Hopkins told reporters Monday that he is excited about the opportunity to play basketball, but right now his focus remains on football.

Hopkins was one of the top high school basketball players in the state last year.  He led D.W. Daniel High School to a state title last season.  He opted to play football in college because he thought it was his best sport long term.

Clemson trudges through frigid practice in Charlotte

Dabo Swinney is preparing for his third bowl game as Clemson's head coach

Clemson made it through a frigid practice today at Charlotte Country Day High School as it resumed its preparation for Friday’s Mieneke Car Care Bowl.  Tigers coach Dabo Swinney called it a productive workout and praised the way his team battled through the cold weather.

It took workers several hours to clear the snow of the practice field this morning but by the time the Tigers opened practice around 11:40, all the snow was plowed and the field was relatively free of snow. It was still a wet and slick track out there, but the team made due.

Clemson QB situation could get worse before it gets better

Even with his struggles, Kyle Parker is better than Tajh Boyd

Anyone who thinks Tajh Boyd is better than Kyle Parker is ignoring reality.  Parker is still better, and that is not good news for Tiger fans that believe Boyd is the answer to all of the offensive problems.

We all know Parker has had his share of struggles this season.  The sophomore slump hit him and hit him hard.  Some say Parker was never the same after the rib injury in the Auburn game.  Some say the loss of C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford were just too much to overcome.  Some say Parker never was able to mesh with the new receiving corps because he was gone most of the summer negotiating a pro baseball contract. Some say Parker was overhyped going into the season, like when Dabo Swinney called him an NFL prospect.

Dabo Swinney excited about Meineke Car Care Bowl

Dabo Swinney is excited about the South Florida matchup

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney met with the media Monday to discuss the Tigers upcoming matchup with South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte.  Swinney made it clear he and his team are excited about the prospects of playing in a New Year’s Eve Bowl game and the opportunity to finish the season on a winning note.

Here a few highlights from Swinney’s comments:

  • Swinney said he has not ruled out any staff changes.
  • Swinney pointed out was that Clemson has not won back-to-back bowl games since 1989-90.  The Tigers beat Kentucky in last year’s Music City Bowl.
  • Kyle Parker will be the starting quarterback in the bowl game.  Swinney said Parker gives them the best chance to win.

Swinney drops second in a row to the Gamecocks

Dabo Swinney could not find the answers for the USC defense

It was a tough night on the sideline for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney as he watched his Tigers lose to USC 29-7.  Swinney becomes the first Clemson coach since Frank Howard in 1968 & 69 to lose two straight years to the Gamecocks.  His team finishes the regular season at 6-6, the Tigers’ fewest wins since 2004.  And he benched his starting quarterback Kyle Parker midway thru the third quarter after he threw a pass interception that was returned for a touchdown.  Parker did not return.

The Tigers will have the chance to finish the season on a winning note.  They are bowl eligible.  Scouts from the Independence and Chic-Fil-A Bowls were in attendance.
