Four Clemson players make first-team All-ACC
Four Clemson players, including three starters from the Tigers ACC leading scoring defense, have been named first-team All-ACC. The team was released by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association on Monday.
Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, safety DeAndre McDaniel and defensive tackle Jarvis Jenkins, were all named first-team All-ACC from the Clemson unit that ranks ninth in the nation in scoring defense. Clemson had more first-team selections to the All-ACC defensive team than any other school.
It is the first time Clemson has had three first-team selections on defense since the 2000 season and the first time Clemson has had four first-team selections total since 2007.
Chris Hairston was the only Clemson player on offense to make first team All-ACC. Tight end Dwayne Allen was a second team selection.
Pondering Ponder and the sack attack
As they prepare for Saturday night’s game at Florida State, Clemson players on both sides of the line have plenty to think about. The defensive guys have to prepare for the ACC’s #2 scoring offense. The Seminoles average nearly 34 points per game, and it’s a balanced attack…214 yards per game thru the air, 196 on the ground. they are converting 50% of their their down attempts.
Quarterback Christian Ponder is third in the ACC in passing effeciency, but he has an elbow injury that required draining yesterday. Of course, Ponder was injured in last year’s loss at Clemson when he attempted to tackle DeAndre McDaniel on an interception return. The Clemson defense is playing at a very high level right now having allowed just four touchdowns over the last four games. The Tigers lead the ACC in scoring defense at 17.6 points per game.

Clemson’s young receivers to get their chance
After watching some of his older receivers struggle thru the first four games, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney is turning to his younger guys. Swinney said Tuesday Tiger fans can expect to see a lot more from his four younger receivers…Bryce McNeal, Jaron Brown, DeAndre Hopkins and Marquan Jones. Of the Tigers’ 55 receptions thus far, only 25 have been made by wide outs. Hopkins has the high mark for that group with 6.

Clemson is averaging 388 yards and 34.5 points per game. Quarterback Kyle Parker is completing just 52.7 percent of his passes. He’s thrown for 652 yards with 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He’s currently 8th in the ACC in pass efficiency.

Clemson players offer thoughts on Auburn
We were able to catch up with a few of the Clemson players at Death Valley Tuesday as we continue to preview the Tigers upcoming game at #15 Auburn Saturday night. Even though Clemson has played two games there are still a lot of questions about what kind of team they have. The first string offense has barely played three full quarters together over the first two games. This Clemson team has yet to be tested, but that will change Saturday night in Auburn.
Quarterback Kyle Parker is excited to be heading back to Auburn. Just a few months ago Parker was playing in an NCAA baseball regional there. He helped Clemson advance to a Super Regional and was drafted in the first round by the Rockies during his last trip on The Plains.

Offensive lineman Chris Hairston made his first career start in the 2007 Chick-fil-A Bowl against Auburn. He remembers how physical the Tigers were in that game and expects more of the same from them this weekend.

One of the subplots in this weekend’s game is the ACC’s early struggles early this season. If Clemson can get the win Saturday it will be the biggest non-conference victory for the ACC this season. Tight end Dwayne Allen told us that the players do want to make a statement for the team and the ACC this weekend.

We snagged Tigers defensive coordinator Kevin Steele too. Steele has the task of slowing down Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s tricky scheme. Malzahn’s unit is lead by talented quarterback Cam Newton, who presents a lot of issues with his size (6-6, 250) and ability to run the football effectively.
