Chris Culliver

The San Francisco 49ers selected South Carolina defensive back Chris Culliver with the 16th pick in the third round of the NFL Draft, the 80th pick overall, Friday. He is the first Gamecock to be selected in this year’s draft.

Culliver, a six-foot, 198-pound cornerback from Garner, N.C., started seven of the first eight games for the Gamecocks in 2010 before suffering a season-ending injury (torn pectoral) vs. Tennessee. He finished his career as South Carolina’s all-time leader in kickoff returns (106) and kick return yardage (2,476) and was third in SEC history in kick returns and kick return yards. He was named to the 2010 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and was invited to the NFL Combine following the season.

NCAA ruling on USC players could come today

Steve Spurrier told reporters on the SEC Coaches Teleconference today that he is under the impression he will get some news from the NCAA on the status of Chris Culliver, Jariel King and Weslye Saunders sometime today.

You can hear Spurrier’s comments on the NCAA investigation at about the 2:00 minute mark in the below audio.

AUDIO: Steve Spurrier on SEC Conference Call

“Haven’t heard anything official yet,” Spurrier said.  “I’ve hear there may be something official later this afternoon.  Maybe you can call our athletic director or… naw, I better not say that.  Wait til it comes out, okay?  I just heard there may be something official later on, but that’s all I heard.

Spurrier did not say if he expected to get good news or bad news from the NCAA.

“I don’t know anything, Spurrier said.  “I just think there may come something today or it may be tomorrow.  We’ll have to wait and see.  We are all waiting.”

Georgia is also waiting on news from the NCAA regarding star wide receiver A.J. Green.  The former Summerville star is being investigated by the NCAA for allegedly selling one of his game jersey’s to a Georgia booster.  Green did not play in the Bulldogs opener last weekend because of the incident.  Georgia is hoping to find out if he can play Saturday against the Gamecocks sometime today.

Five USC players named All-SEC by coaches

USC senior defensive end Cliff Matthews and sophomore defensive back Stephon Gilmore were both selected first team All-SEC by the league’s coaches today.

Three Gamecocks made the second team.  Sophomore wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, senior defensive lineman Ladi Ajiboye and senior defensive back Chris Culliver.

Florida led the league with 10 All-conference selections.  Defending national champion Alabama had nine selections.

Lorenzo Ward explains Culliver suspension

We talked to USC defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward today. He shed some light on the Chris Culliver situation for us. For those of you behind the story, Steve Spurrier announced earlier this week that Culliver would not be making the trip to Arkansas with the team this week because of a shoulder/disciplinary reason. Now we know some of the details.

AUDIO: Ward on Culliver suspension (1:29)

Culliver had a terrible game last week against Tennessee and coaches found out after the game that he was nursing a bad shoulder against the Vols. Apparently no one was aware of just how much the shoulder was bothering Culliver. Ward decided that Culliver’s shoulder wasn’t in good enough shape to play safety so on Monday he told Culliver that he was going to move him to corner back this week. Culliver didn’t take the news well. According to one report he actually walked off the field after he was told of the switch.

Because of his reaction and his shoulder problem Ward and Steve Spurrier decided to leave Culliver in Columbia this weekend. For Gamecock fans worried that this is another case of an underclassmen mailing in the end of the season to get ready for the NFL, Ward says not to worry. Culliver has told Ward that he plans to be back next season and that he knows he is not ready for the NFL.
