USC pitching coach Mark Calvi has accepted an offer to become the head coach in waiting at South Alabama a source confirmed Wednesday night.
Calvi interviewed for the job late last week. He will serve as an assistant coach for Steve Kittrell next season before assuming the head coaching duties when Kittrell retires. Other reported candidates for the job were former Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico, Scottsdale Giants manager Mike Goff, Virginia pitching coach Karl Kuhn, Southeastern Louisiana head coach Jay Artigues, and Florida State assistant Mike Martin Jr. Two current members of the USA staff also were interviewed.
Calvi spend six years with the Gamecocks. This was his finest season as he developed a deep staff which led the Gamecocks to the National Championship.
Meantime, USC associate head coach Chad Holbrook remains a candidate for the head coaching job at Winthrop. Holbrook is scheduled to interview for that position next week.
