USC pitching coach Calvi headed to South Alabama

USC pitching coach Mark Calvi has accepted an offer to become the head coach in waiting at South Alabama a source confirmed Wednesday night.

Calvi interviewed for the job late last week.  He will serve as an assistant coach for Steve Kittrell next season before assuming the head coaching duties when Kittrell retires.  Other reported candidates for the job were former Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico, Scottsdale Giants manager Mike Goff, Virginia pitching coach Karl Kuhn, Southeastern Louisiana head coach Jay Artigues, and Florida State assistant Mike Martin Jr.  Two current members of the USA staff also were interviewed.

Calvi spend six years with the Gamecocks.  This was his finest season as he developed a deep staff which led the Gamecocks to the National Championship.

Meantime, USC associate head coach Chad Holbrook remains a candidate for the head coaching job at Winthrop.  Holbrook is scheduled to interview for that position next week.

USC’s Holbrook to meet with Winthrop

USC associate head baseball coach Chad Holbrook will meet next week with Winthrop officials to dicuss their vacant head coaching position.  Holbrook said no definite date for the interview has been set but it could take place on Thursday.

Winthrop is seeking a replacement for Joe Hudek who was fired June 30th after 19 seasons with the Eagles.  Holbrook just completed his second season at USC.  He is considered one of the top recruiters in the country.

USC outslugs Alabama to win another SEC series

USC baseball coach Ray Tanner came down with a case of vertigo before yesterday’s game with Alabama. If the illness weren’t enough to make his head spin, the balls flying out of Carolina Stadium yesterday certainly were. The teams combined for nine home runs as the Gamecocks outlasted the Crimson Tide 20-15 to win the SEC series two games to one.

The Gamecocks have won all of their league series this season. They are 34-9 overall and 16-5 in the SEC, and they hold a one game lead over Florida for the best record in the league.

The Gamecocks got the long ball from Jackie Bradley Jr, Brady Thomas, Evan Marzilli and Kyle Enders. They set a stadium record with 25 hits. The Gamecocks scored 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to rally from an 8-4 deficit.

Six Gamecock pitchers allowed 16 hits and five home runs. Tyler Webb earned the win to even his record at 2-2. The Gamecocks return to action Wednesday night at home against Winthrop.
