Chad Holbrook staying put at USC

USC associate head baseball coach Chad Holbrook is staying put. Holbrook interviewed for the head coaching job at Tennessee Tuesday and was considered by many to be one of the frontrunners for that job. This morning he announced he was pulling his name out of the hat and remaining at USC.

“I am flattered by the interest of the University of Tennessee but am withdrawing my name from consideration for the head coaching position in Knoxville,” said Holbrook. “Tennessee is a great institution with a great athletic program but at this point in my career I belong here at South Carolina. My family and I love the University and Columbia and we look forward to continuing to build on the championship program we’ve been so fortunate to be a part of. I want to thank Dr. Pastides, Eric Hyman, and Coach Tanner for their support throughout this process. They have been incredible and I can’t thank them enough. We’re excited about returning to the College World Series and hope to see plenty of Garnet and Black in Omaha. Go Gamecocks!”

“The official response is I love being at South Carolina and that’s where I want to be a long time,” Holbrook said. “When you get around good players that win some games from time to time sometimes your name is going to pop up. I am in a place I want to be a long time and my family is in a place they want to live a long time.”

Holbrook said all coaches listen when a head coaching job pops up and he is doing the same with the Tennessee vacancy.

USC assistant Chad Holbrook gets new contract

USC associate head baseball coach Chad Holbrook received a multi-year contract approved by the University’s Board of Trustees on Friday afternoon. Holbrook, who has been with the Gamecocks for two years, was granted a three- year contract, taking him through the 2013 season. Holbrook’s contract is worth $160,000 annually.

“It’s an honor to be a part of the baseball program at South Carolina,” said associate head coach Chad Holbrook. “I’m so thankful to Ray Tanner, athletics director Eric Hyman and President Pastides for allowing me to coach at such a proud university and baseball program. We will continue to do all we can to ensure that our program competes at the highest level. It is my goal to be a coach at South Carolina a very long time. My family loves Columbia and we love calling South Carolina home.”

Holbrook, serves as hitting instructor, oversees the Gamecock offense, including base running and the short game and is the third base coach. He also works with the outfielders and is the team’s recruiting coordinator.

Holbrook came to the Gamecock program in July of  2008 after serving 15 seasons as a member of the University of North Carolina coaching staff.

“We are fortunate to have Coach Holbrook as an integral part of our program,” said head coach Ray Tanner. “He is an exceptional coach, recruiter and mentor for our players. The job he has done and continues to do is exemplarily. He is one of the top coaches in the country and he is an outstanding ambassador for the University of South Carolina.”

Movement expected this week on USC baseball staff

A source said Sunday night USC’s new pitching coach as well as the coaching future of Gamecock associate head coach Chad Holbrook likely will be resolved this week.

Gamecock head coach Ray Tanner has been working on a replacement for pitching coach Mark Calvi since the end of last week when Calvi accepted the head coach in waiting position at South Alabama.  The source could not disclose names high up on Tanner’s list because of the sensitive nature of the hiring, those most closely involved have a connection with Tanner at USC or with Holbrook.  Former USC pitching coach Jerry Meyers, now the head coach at Old Dominion, former Gamecock pitcher Kip Bauknight and Roger Williams, pitching coach at Louisville and the former pitching coach at North Carolina when Holbrook coached there, are three who have been mentioned who meet that criteria.

Holbrook is a candidate for the head coaching job at Winthrop but is in line for a substantial contract upgrade at USC to keep him with the Gamecocks.  The source said the title of head coach in waiting has certainly been placed on the table in those contract talks and is something favored by Tanner.
