Ellington talks about joining USC football team

Bruce Ellington confirms he will rejoin the basketball team after football season ends

Bruce Ellington spoke to the media Tuesday following the USC football team’s workout. It is the first time he’s talked publicly since he decided to join the Gamecock football team. Ellington was the leading scorer on the basketball team as a freshman last season.

Ellington said he had been considering playing football for a while and decided to make the move shortly after the first round loss in the SEC Tournament this month. Ellington said he still plans to rejoin the basketball team after football season ends. However, he will focus on football, not basketball this spring and summer.

Ellington was a two sport star at Berkley High School.

USC basketball coach Darrin Horn issued a statement Thursday night on the news freshman point guard Bruce Ellington will join the Gamecock football team this summer.

“To me the most rewarding thing in this job is the players and my relationship with them. From the first time I met Bruce I knew playing both sports in college was a possibility and we support him in every way we can. We hope he has a lot of success in football and look forward to having him back next year for basketball.”

Ellington led the Gamecock basketball team in scoring last season, averaging close to 13 points per game.  He is expected to play receiver and return kicks for the football team.

Sam Muldrow named SEC Defensive Player of the Year

USC  senior forward Sam Muldrow was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year Tuesday.  he is the first player in USC history to win that award. Muldrow also earned All-Defensive Team honors.

Muldrow enters this week’s SEC Tournament averaging a league leading 3.3 blocks per game.  Muldrow is also averaging 13 points and 7.9 rebounds. 

Meanwhile point guard Bruce Ellington was named to the All-Freshman team.  He is the first Gamecock to be named to the All-Freshman team since the 2008 season. He has started all 29 games this season and is averaging 13 points per game.

USC will play Ole Miss Thursday at 3:30 in the opening game of the SEC Tournament.

Florida added to its lead in the SEC East and avenged a January loss to USC with a     thumping of the Gamecocks Wednesday night at the Colonial Life Arena.  The Gators broke a two game losing streak to the Gamecocks and improved to 8-2 in the SEC, 19-5 overall.  The Gamecocks lost their second straight game and their third in a row at home.  They fall to 4-5 in the SEC and 13-9 overall.

The Gators jumped on the Gamecocks quickly scoring the first nine points.  USC didn’t break thru until Ramon Galloway hit a three with 14:35 left in the half.  Galloway, in fact, scored the Gamecocks first seven points.

USC takes SEC East lead with overtime win over Arkansas

USC scored the first six points of overtime and went on to defeat Arkansas 81-74 Wednesday night at the Colonial Life Arena.  With the win, the Gamecocks take over first place in the SEC East with a 3-1 record.  It’s their best start in league play since a 5-1 start in 2004, the last time USC reached the NCAA Tournament.  

Ramon Galloway led the Gamecocks with 21 points off the bench, one off his career high.  Sam Muldrow added 20 points including five straight during a crucial point in overtime when the Gamecocks built their lead.  Muldrow also contributed 8 rebounds and 6 blocks.  It’s his straight big scoring game against Arkansas.  He scored 23 points in a loss last season.  Marshawn Powell led Arkansas with a career high 21 points.
