A long run of ACC frustration ended for Clemson Saturday afternoon before the Tigers kicked off their game with Virginia.  When North Carolina beat Boston College, that made the Tigers ACC Atlantic Division champions, their first ACC title of any kind since 1991.  Then, the Tigers went out and made it a happy Senior Day for CJ Spiller, Jacoby Ford, Thomas Austin, Michael Palmer, Ricky Sapp and the others who would be playing their last game at Death Valley by rolling over Virginia 34-21.

The Cavaliers battled the Tigers nearly even in the first half trailing  just 24-21 at the break thanks to a 23 yard touchdown pass from Jameel Sewell to Mikell Simpson on the last play of the half.  But the Clemson defense rose to the occassion in the second half limiting the Cavaliers to just 40 yards over the final 30 minutes.  The Tigers sacked Virginia quarterbacks seven times in the second half.

Virginia finished with just 273 total yards while Clemson had 366.  While CJ Spiller was held in check (58 yards rushing, 39 yards receiving, 1 touchdown), receiver Jacoby Ford went basically unchecked by the Cavalier defense.  Ford had 6 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown, and he finished the day with 211 all purpose yards.

Spiller heads to title game

Spiller set another ACC record, this one for all purpose yards in a season, with 114 against the Cavaliers.    His total now stands at 2066 yards.  He’s also the only player in the country to score at least one touchdown in every game.  Spiller now has 6974 all purpose yards for his career and needs just 28 to become the fifth player in FBS history to reach 7000 yards.

Quarterback Kyle Parker continued to show his improvement.  He was 19-26 for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Parker has thrown for at least 230 yards in four games this season.  During the Tigers current six game winning streak, Parker has thrown 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions.

Clemson’s tight ends have 46 receptions this season after getting four against Virginia.  That ties the school single season record held by the 1970 team.  And the tight ends have seven touchdown catches, and that ties the single season record set in 1974.

Senior Kavell Connor, a Virginia native, had a career high 15 tackles to lead the defense.  Rennie Moore recorded two of the seven sacks.  Brandon Maye also had a big game with 12 tackles and 2 forced fumbles.  The Tigers allowed the Cavaliers across midfield just once in the second half, and that drive ended on downs at the Clemson 34.

The Tigers are now 8-3 overall and they finish 6-2 for the ACC campaign.  They will play at USC next Saturday with a 12:00 kickoff on ESPN.  The following Saturday  the Tigers will face Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship game in Tampa at 8:00 on ESPN.  That will be a rematch of the second game of the season, a 30-27 Tech win in Atlanta.

Clemson battled 14th ranked TCU to the final minutes before falling the Horned Frogs 14-10 at rain soaked Death Valley.  The Tigers once again squandered numerous scoring opportunities including a late fourth quarter drive that died at the TCU 16.  The Tigers have scored just one offensive touchdown in their last two games.

CJ Spiller led the Tiger offense with 112 rushing yards on 26 carries.  He also caught three  passes for 79 yards including a 60 yarder that carried to the TCU four yard line.  Spiller later scored on a one yard one.

Tiger quarterback Kyle Parker faced a heavy rush much of the day though he  was only sacked once.  He was flushed from the pocket on several occassions and forced to throw the ball away or missed his receivers.  Parker finished the day 17-37 for 192 yards.

The Tigers made four trips into the TCU red zone and game away with ten points.  Besides Spiller’s touchdown and a 25 yard Richard Jackson field goal, the Tigers had a missed Jackson field goal from 34 yards and turned the ball over on downs from the TCU 17 and TCU 16.  The missed field goal was obviously huge because the Tigers could have kicked for the win at the end instead of being forced to go for the touchdown.  But to be fair, TCU also missed a 42 yard field goal in the third quarter.  The Tigers finished with 309 total yards including 117 on the ground.

The Clemson defense yielded 388 yards including 162 on the ground.  TCU quarterback Andy Dalton rushed for 86 yards and passed for 226 yards and two touchdowns.  He had a lot of success with the zone read option and found the middle of the Clemson defense wide open on several plays.  The Tigers apparently were running a lot of dime coverage leaving  just one linebacker to play the middle of the field, and TCU attacked that.

Final Stats

Georgia Tech 30-Clemson 27

Georgia Tech built a 24-0 second quarter lead on Clemson but still needed a field goal in the final minute to defeat the Tigers 30-27 in the ACC opener for both teams at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta Thursday night.  The Yellow Jackets were unstoppable for the first 20 minutes ripping thru the Clemson defense with their triple option attack and with two big special teams plays.

Anthony Allen opened the scoring with an 82 yard run.  Then, Clemson attempted to punt the ball out of bounds from a field goal formation, only the ball went to Jerrard Tarrant, ane he went 85 yards for a score to make it 14-0.

Later in the first quarter Tech drove deep into Clemson terretory and set up for an apparent 51 yard field goal.  But kicker Scott Blair took the direct snap and hit a wide open Demaryius Thomas with a 34 yard scoring pass.  21-0 Georgia Tech and the Tigers were reeling.

Blair added a 24 yard field goal to put Tech up 24-0 with 10:29 to play in the half.  That’s when Clemson finally got its offense in gear.  Kyle Parker hit a streaking CJ Spiller in stride down the sideline for a 63 yard touchdown and the Tigers were on the board.  Parker would finish trhe night 15-31 for 261 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

While the Tiger defense was holding Tech in check, the offense continued to roll scoring 20 unanswered points.  Tight end Dwayne Allen caught a nine yard pass from Parker;  Jacoby Ford latched on to a 77 yard bomb from Parker; and Richard Jackson blasted field goals of 24 and 53 yards.  All of sudden, Clemson led 27-24 and the most unlikelist of victories seemed very possible.

But Tech came right back on their next possession to tie the game with a 34 yard Blair field goal.  The game’s most controversial play occurred on Clemson’s next possession.  Facing third and eleven from the Tigers 44, Parker hit Ford with a 38 yard pass to the Tech 18.  But Tiger guard Thomas Austin was called for holding, and the play was wiped out.  Two plays later, the Tigers punted and Tech began it’s winning drive.

The Jackets took over at their own 35 and after a couple of short running plays  stung the Tigers with a 39 yard pass from Josh Nesbitt to Demarious Thomas to the Tiger 27.  Three running plays moved the ball to the Clemson 18 and from there Blair booted the game winning 36 yard field goal.
