The College of Charleston pulled off one of its biggest wins in school history Monday night with an 82-79 overtime win over 9th ranked North Carolina at the jam packed Carolina First Arena in downtown Charleston. Andrew Goudelock hit a huge three pointer to send the game into overtime and the Cougars got a big defensive stop in the final seconds of O.T. to spring the upset against the defending national champs.

Goudelock finished with 24 points. Former Marlboro County standout and Florida State transfer Casaan Breeden added 15 points and he had five blocks. Charleston hit 13 three point shots in the game. North Carolina only made one.

Notice I said this is only “one” of the biggest wins in school history for the Cougars. Charleston is no stranger to knocking off the big boys. This is their third win over the Tar Heels (1998, 2001) and they are 3-3 all-time against the Heels. Cougar fans that remember the John Kresse years will also recall the NCAA tournament win over Maryland among the other big wins in recent memory. The list of upsets is why the College of Charleston has been considered one of the top Mid-Major (I know some coaches and fans hate that term) programs in the country. However, they have come up just short in their attempts to return to the NCAA tournament the past few seasons. They have lost twice in the Southern Conference tournament title game under Cremins.

Maybe this is the year they get back in the Dance. Regardless, it is a great win for the Cougars and a proud moment for college basketball fans here in South Carolina.

Some other in-state scores from Monday night, Coastal Carolina gets its 14th win of the season with a 76-62 thumping over Presbyterian. The Chanticleers are 4-0 in the Big South. Charleston Southern over Winthrop 57-54 and East Tennessee State beat Upstate by one 63-62.

Cremins gets extension at Charleston

From College of Charleston Sports Information….

College of Charleston men’s basketball coach Bobby Cremins has signed a two-year contract extension, athletic director Joe Hull announced on Friday.  The extension runs through the 2013-14 campaign.

Cremins, who enters his 29th season as a college head coach and his fourth at Charleston, has led the Cougars to a 65-37 overall record and a pair of Southern Conference championship game appearances. Cremins helped Charleston to a 22-11 record in 2006-07, a 16-17 mark in 2007-08 and a 27-9 record in 2008-09.

Charleston capped last season with its second Southern Conference Tournament title game appearance in three years under Cremins.  Cremins, who earned his 500th career win in December with a victory over Coastal Carolina, led the Cougars to the second round of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

The season included a pair of wins over Davidson and an overtime upset of Cremins’ alma mater South Carolina, 82-80.  Jermaine Johnson, Tony White, Jr. and Andrew Goudelock all surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for their careers.  Goudelock was a unanimous All-SoCon first team selection, while Johnson earned third team honors from the league’s media.

“I love it at College of Charleston and I’m excited about the direction of the program,” said Cremins. “I really appreciate the support of the College of Charleston and its administration.”

“We are thrilled to have Bobby Cremins as our head basketball coach,” added Hull.  “Bobby is a proven winner, a terrific person and a great fit for the College of Charleston.”

The Bronx, N.Y. native, who coached six seasons at Appalachian State (1976-81, 100-70) and 19 at Georgia Tech (1982-2000, 354-237), sports a 519-344 (.601) overall career record. He led Appalachian State to one NCAA Tournament berth and Georgia Tech to nine.
