Two former Clemson golfers earn PGA Tour cards

In what is considered one of the most grueling tests in all of professional golf, former Clemson All-Americans Ben Martin and Kyle Stanley both earned 2011 PGA Tour cards Monday at the sixth and final round of Q-School in Orlando, FL. The two were teammates together at Clemson from 2007-09, and both will be PGA Tour rookies in 2011.

With Martin and Stanley’s performances, five former Clemson golfers have now earned full PGA Tour status for 2011. Former Tiger greats D.J. Trahan, Jonathan Byrd and Lucas Glover all qualified for the 2011 PGA Tour by finishing in the top 125 of the money list in 2010. Trahan finished 47th, Byrd was 55th and Glover was 57th.

Martin cashes first big check

Former Clemson All-American Ben Martin took just two professional events to gain his first victory. The recent Clemson graduate won the E-Golf tour’s Forest Oaks Classic at Forest Oaks Country Club in High Point, NC on Saturday after a playoff with Brent Munson.

Martin birdied three of the last four holes on Saturday to finish with a 67 and 20 under par 268 for the four days. He was tied with Munson, a former All-American at North Alabama was the Division II National Player of the Year. Martin then won the playoff on the second hole.

Martin finished with rounds of 65-69-67-67 for his 268 total and won $34,900. He finished 11th in his first E-Golf Professional event last week.

Martin finishes second at U.S. Amateur

Clemson senior Ben Martin finished runner-up Sunday afternoon in the championship match of the U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills Country Club. Martin was defeated 7 & 5 by Byeong-Hun An, who at age 17 became the youngest winner in the history of the prestigious amateur event.The 36-hole championship match brought a close to a grueling week for Martin. It began on Monday, when the Greenwood, S.C. product fired an opening round 73 during the first day of stroke play. He followed that with a two-under par 68 in the second round, which positioned him as one of the top seeded players for the match play portion of the championship.

Martin then won five matches to advance to the finals. He defeated Tyson Alexander in 21 holes during his first match play event. In the second round of match play, he knocked off Chris Ward of McKinney, Texas in 19 holes. He beat his third-round opponent, Nico Geyger of Chile, by a score of 2 & 1. In the quarterfinals, Martin again won by a score of 2 & 1, defeating David Lingmerth of Sweden. On Saturday, Martin put together his best effort during the match play portion of the event and won 5 & 4 against Texas senior Charlie Holland in the semifinals.

50-50 day for Clemson golfers at Amatuer

Ben Martin continued his run in the United States Amateur at Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK on Friday with a 2 & 1 victory over David Lingwerth of Sweden. However, Clemson teammate Phillip Mollica dropped a quarterfinal match to Bhavik Patel, 1-up.

Martin now faces Charlie Holland, a senior on the University of Texas golf team, on Saturday. Television coverage of that semifinal match begins at 4:00 PM on NBC. It will be shown on a tape delay basis. To follow the progress of the match on the internet to go usamateur.com. [Read more...]

Clemson’s Molica and Martin advance

Clemson teammates Ben Martin and Phillip Mollica both won two matches at the United States Amateur on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, OK.It marks the first time Clemson has had two golfers in the quarterfinals of the same US Amateur and it is the first time since 1993 that any Clemson golfer has reached the quarterfinals. Danny Ellis, who was a finalist in 1993, was the last Tiger to do it.

Martin defeated Chris Ward earlier in the day in 19 holes, then downed Nico Geyger of Chile and the hometown University of Tulsa golf program in the afternoon match, 2 &1. Mollica stopped 16-year-old Cameron Wilson of Connecticut in the morning 1-up, then defeated Mark Anderson of Beaufort, SC 1-up in a Clemson vs. South Carolina match in the afternoon. Mollica just finished his career at Clemson and Anderson just finished his career at South Carolina.
