Tigers sticking to one game at a time approach

Clemson defense to face ACC's leading rusher this Saturday

After its 2-3 start, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was forced to adjust his team’s thinking from the big picture to the much smaller picture of the old “one game at a time” approach.  So far, it’s working.

The Tigers have won their last two games to keep alive their hopes for a second straight Atlantic Division title.  Swinney, in his conversations with the media, is identifying each game as a season into itself.  That approach has been adopted by his players as well.

In preparing for this week’s game at Boston College, the Tigers appear to be totally focused on the task at hand.  To the point that some weren’t even aware their next two opponents, NC State and Florida State, play each other Thursday night in Raleigh.

Stopping the run, running the ball keys to Clemson victory

Bowers leads defensive charge

Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and his staff had lived with the two losses to Georgia last year and knew the same old approach this time would not work.  In last year’s games, Tech combined to rush for 634 yards.

The adjustments Steele and company made Saturday paid off in a big way.  Tech was held to just 242 rushing yards, well off their season’s average and their second lowest total of the season.  And the Tigers held Tech quarterback Joshua Nesbitt, the ACC’s second leading rusher entering the game, to just two yards on 15 carries, his lowest single game rushing total as a starting quarterback.

Career day for Ellington

Offensively, running back Andre Ellington was the star of the show.  The sophomore from Berkeley High School rushed for a career high 166 yards and he scored 3 touchdowns.  He had a 55 yard run in the opening quarter, his third touchdown run of more than 50 yards this season.  Ellington also went over 1000 yards in his career on just 151 carries, the second fewest carries to 1000 yards in school history.  CJ Spiller did it on 142 attempts.

With Tech’s defense having to respect the run, that opened things up for quarterback Kyle Parker.  With plenty of time to throw (he was not sacked), Parker was 17-27 for 167 yards and a touchdown.  He completed passes to 8 different receivers with DeAndre Hopkins leading the way with 4 catches for 50 yards.

The Tigers finished with 403 total yards averaging over six yards per play.

The Tigers lost reserve linebacker Daniel Andrews during the game to a torn ACL.  His was the only major injury incurred by the Tigers.

Clemson’s Bowers and Ellington garner honors

Bowers tallied three sacks against Maryland Saturday

Clemson’s Andre Ellington was honored by the same website as the National Kickoff Returner of the Week.

Bowers had three sacks and four total tackles for loss among his six tackles, in leading Clemson’s defense in a 31-7 win over Maryland. All three of his sacks were in key third-down situations. The biggest took place in the second period. With Clemson leading 10-7, Maryland had the ball on the Clemson seven with a third-and-one. Bowers sacked Maryland quarterback Danny O’Brien to force Maryland into a field goal attempt, which they missed, allowing Clemson to hold the lead.

Tigers get their swagger back in win over Maryland

Da'Quan Bowers leads a dominating Clemson defensive effort in win over Maryland

The Clemson Tigers defeated the Maryland Terrapins 31-7 Saturday at Death Valley in front of 71,000 fans, including CJ Spiller, who’s #28 was retired during halftime.

Clemson won despite being out-gained by over 100 yards.  The offense is still not clicking on all cylinders, but the defense/special teams filled in nicely, creating big play after big play.  Andre Ellington did his best CJ Spiller impression by returning a kickoff 87 yards for TD in the second quarter.  The defense forced 3 turnovers, including an INT returned for TD by Xavier Brewer in the 3rd quarter.  Da’Quan Bowers added 3 sacks on the day, putting constant pressure on Maryland’s QB Danny O’Brien.

The Tigers took a step in the right direction today, ending their 3 game losing streak.  The win gets them back to .500 on the season with a 3-3 record overall, with a 1-2 mark in the ACC.  Maryland falls to 4-2 overall, with a 1-1 mark in the ACC.

Andre Ellington ready to be Clemson’s workhorse

Andre Ellington will get more carries this week against Maryland

Andre Ellington is now the featured running back at Clemson.  Ellington had been rotating starts splitting carried with Jamie Harper, but that will change this weekend against Maryland.  Ellington will be the starter and his is going to get the lion share of the carries.  Ellington is the ACC’s third leading rusher with 435 yards this season.  He is averaging 6.6 yards per carry and has scored seven touchdowns. He’s averaging 87 yards rushing per game.

AUDIO: Andre Ellinton on his expanded role

Harper has been in a lot of people’s crosshairs the past couple of weeks.  Many have lamented the fact he is cutting into Andre Ellington’s carries each game.  Harper is taking his reduced roll in stride.

Harper has carried the ball 60 times, just six fewer than Ellington.  He has rushed for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He’s averaging  four yards per carry this season.
