Ellington’s status still in question for USC game

Andre Ellington hopes to be back on the field Saturday against USC

Clemson running back Andre Ellington returned to practice Monday, but in a very limited role.   Ellington spent his time jogging along the sideline to test his injured toe.  Tigers coach Dabo Swinney says Ellington’s status for Saturday’s game against USC will be re-evaluated later this week.  Swinney has said he is hopeful Ellington will play against the Gamecocks.

Ellington injured his toe during the October 30th game at Boston College.  He hasn’t played since.  He will have surgery after the season.  He has spent the past three weeks rehabbing the injury with the hope he can finish the season before the operation.

Ellington leads the Tigers with 686 yards rushing this season.

***UPDATE*** Dabo Swinney said Tuesday Ellington has improved enough to be considered a gametime decision Saturday**

Ellington will need surgery, still hopes to return this year

Andre Ellington hopes to return this season

Clemson running back Andre Ellington will need surgery to correct the injured ligament in his big toe.  Dabo Swinney called the injury “turf toe, with a little something else” on Saturday.  The post surgery rehab time is about four months.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that the doctor Ellington met with last week told him the injury will not get worse this year and if he continues to  get it treated  he may be able to return for the final two games of the regular season.  If the toe responds to the treatment Ellington could return for the game at Wake Forest on November 20th.  He would wait until after the season to undergo the surgery.

If Ellington’s toe doesn’t respond to the rehab, he will shut it down in a few weeks and opt for the surgery sooner, rather than later.

Swinney said once Ellington has the surgery, he expected to make a 100 percent recovery.

As if the loss at Boston College Saturday wasn’t enough, Andre Ellington, arguably the Tigers best offensive player, suffered a turf toe injury in the game.  The injury occurred in the second half against the Eagles.  Ellington said after the game that it is not major and he expects to be back on the field next Saturday against N.C. State.
