SportsTalk Rewind 9.07.11: Wofford’s Mike Ayers (AUDIO)

The Wofford Terriers got their football season off to a good start, beating Presbyterian in a close one, 35-28, up in Clinton.  Tonight, we got ahold of Terrier Head Coach, Mike Ayers, to get his thoughts on the week one win over the Blue Hose.

Saturday will bring a tougher test for Ayers and the gang, as they head up to Memorial Stadium to take on the Clemson Tigers.  Coach Ayers evoked memories of his squads’ last trip to Columbia, when they put up a hell of a fight against the Gamecocks, and cited it as reason to believe his Terriers can compete in Clemson.

Wofford adds to Hall of Fame

Former Wofford College student-athletes Katon Bethay ’06, Adrien Borders ’05 and Ellen Rogers ’06 have been selected by the Hall of Fame Committee of the Wofford College Terrier Club Board of Directors as the 2011 inductees into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

In addition, the Hall of Fame will honor Craig Phillips as the Distinguished Service Award winner and Rob Gregory ‘64 as Honorary Letterman.

The Hall of Fame will induct its newest class on October 15th when the Terriers host UVa.-Wise in football.

The Hall of Fame recognizes “those former athletes and coaches who, by outstanding athletic achievement and service, have made lasting and significant contributions to the cause of sports at Wofford College, the Spartanburg community, South Carolina and the nation.”

Bethay is recognized for his performance in football and track and field, while Rogers was a four-time All-SoCon honoree in women’s tennis. Borders earned All-SoCon honors eight times in track and field.

Palmetto Pigskin Tour: Wofford

Our final stop on our Palmetto Pigskin Tour is none other than the Wofford Terriers.  Phil made the trip up to the Sparkle City to sit down with Terrier Head Coach, Mike Ayers, to discuss some pretty lofty expectations for his program in 2011.  This is year 24 for Ayers, and his squad enters this season as potential National Championship contenders.

Wednesday Statewide Practice Reports

Coastal Carolina

CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina football team had its second scrimmage of the 2011 preseason camp Wednesday morning at Brooks Stadium. Quarterback Aramis Hillary and tight end Jamie Childers, who also played well at quarterback, teamed up for the big play of the day, a 67-yard touchdown on the first drive

”After two scrimmages, I can see we are getting better, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said head coach David Bennett. “We have to do a better job as coaches, getting these players ready to scrimmage. I know it was early in the morning after two practices yesterday, but there has to be more excitement, enthusiasm and communication. These scrimmages are very valuable in getting ready for the season and we just have one-and-a-half scrimmages left. We cannot afford to waste these opportunities or use them to the fullest.”  [Read more...]
