Winthrop has fired head basketball coach Randy Peele. The school announced this afternoon its decision to part ways with Peele following his second straight losing season. The Eagles finished this season with a 12-20 record, its first 20 loss season in almost 15 years.
“We are certainly very appreciative of the hard work and dedication shown by Coach Peele on behalf of this university over the past nine years, first as an assistant and then as head coach of our men’s basketball program,” Athletic Director Tom Hickman said in a school issued statement.
Peele was has been at Winthrop nine years. He spent four seasons assisting Gregg Marshall before taking over the head coaching duties when Marshall left for the Wichita State job five years ago. Peele led the team to Big South titles in 2008 and 2010. He will receive 165,000 dollars from the school for the final year owed on his contract.
