SportsTalk Rewind 1.09.11: USC’s Darrin Horn

The USC basketball team had won 6-of-7 games headed into their weekend showdown, and SEC opener, against Kentucky.  The Gamecocks lost to the #2 Wildcats, 79-64,  Saturday afternoon in Lexington.   Tomorrow the Gamecocks will try to rebound and pick up their first league win when Vanderbilt visits the Colonial Life Arena at 9:00.  Today Gamecock Head Coach, Darrin Horn, spoke to the media about the loss to Kentucky, and the upcoming game against the Commodores.

SEC announces new format for baseball tournament

The 2012 SEC Baseball Tournament, which will be held in Hoover, Ala., at Regions Park for the 15th consecutive year, will increase to 10 teams and will begin on Tuesday, May 22nd. The tournament will continue to follow a format that is modeled in a similar fashion to previous SEC Tournament and College World Series brackets. The 10 teams are seeded 1-10 with the two divisional champions guaranteed of the top two seeds and first-round byes. Games played from Tuesday thru Friday are double elimination with single elimination starting on Saturday.

USC’s Ingram and Watkins named first team All-SEC

USC senior defensive end Melvin Ingram and Gamecock senior offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins both earned first team AP All-SEC honors Monday afternoon. Ingram led the Gamecocks with 8 ½ sacks this year. He also scored three touchdowns, including two in a win at Georgia.

Carolina junior wide receiver Alshon Jeffery was named to the second team. Senior defensive back Antonio Allen and Sophomore Marcus Lattimore also made the second team.

Devin Taylor was honorable mention.

Alabama running back Trent Richardson was named the offensive player of the year. LSU’s Tyrann Mathieu, AKA “The Honey Badger” was the defensive player of the year. Georgia running back Isaiah Crowell was the freshman of the year. LSU head man Les Miles picked up coach of the year honors.

Swinney fires back at Spurrier for comment HBC didn’t make (AUDIO, VIDEO)

Evidently this years rendition of the Clemson-USC rivalry did not end with the weekends football game.  Tonight following Clemson’s preparations for their ACC title game, Clemson Head Coach, Dabo Swinney, was asked not only about their upcoming matchup with Virginia Tech, but also about comments Steve Spurrier supposedly made after the game.  Here is Swinney’s rebuttal:

The only problem is Spurrier didn’t say “We may not be Alabama or LSU, but we sure ain’t Clemson folks.”  That comment was made by Todd Ellis, the former Gamecock quarterback and play-by-play man for USC.

Chad Holbrook visits SportsTalk

USC assistant coach Chad Holbrook stopped by SportsTalk First Edition today to talk about the upcoming Gamecock baseball season and the 2012 recruiting class.

Holbrook was named the 2011 ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year. He has been tabbed as one of the top recruiters in all of college sports by ESPN The Magazine.

The Gamecocks are looking defend their back-to-back national championships on the diamond. South Carolina’s season starts on February 17th.

Carolina put together a recruiting class in 2011 that was received the top ranking by Collegiate Baseball and was tabbed as the 6th-ranked class by Baseball America.

USC currently has 17 commitments in the class of 2012:
