Glass hopes to reschedule his visit with USC

Tevin Glass

6-8 Tevin Glass of Alpharetta, GA had his scheduled official visit to USC for this past weekend canceled by the Gamecocks.  “Coach Martin said we had to reschedule because he had something come up with his family,” Glass said.  Glass said he talked again with the Gamecocks about three days ago and he feels likes they are still interested in him.  He is also talking to Murray State, Memphis, Florida State, Auburn, Xavier and Tennessee.  He has not scheduled any official visits at this point and does not have a favorite.

Football News:

DL Michael Hill of Pendleton landed an offer from LSU Friday according to his coach Paul Sutherland. Hill got the offer from Tigers’ defensive coordinator John Chavis who was at school to watch spring practice. Earlier in the week recruiters from Georgia Tech and Ohio State were by the school. Tennessee is due to be at the school Monday. Hill has been focusing on Clemson, USC, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State and Michigan.

DB Justin Williams of Port St. Lucie, FL is closing in on a decision and plans to have one by the end of May. “That’s what I’m planning on doing,” Williams said. “Right now, I’m kind of leaning to South Carolina. I talked to Coach (Grady) Brown today (Sunday). He asked how everything is going and said he’s coming down soon to watch me practice.” Williams said USC’s history with cornerbacks is appealing. “They send a lot of corners to the NFL,” he said. “It’s my dream to play in the NFL. And I like Coach Brown. He’s a good person.” Williams has offers from USC, Purdue, Middle Tennessee State, Florida International and Massachusetts. And he’s expecting one from Cincinnati this week. Though he’s pinpointing the end of the month for a decision, Williams said he has no specific date. Last season he had 30 tackles with 4 passes broken up and he returned one kickoff for a touchdown.

Baseball News:

The USC baseball team landed a commitment late last month from Mauldin right hander and shortstop Cory Thompson. Diamond Prospects regards Thompson as the #1 shortstop and #1 right handed pitching prospect in the state for the 2013 class. He’s the 10th commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2013 class.

PG Willie Moore heading to the West Coast

Moore chooses Oregon

6-3 point guard Willie Moore of Cincinnati committed to Oregon Friday morning while on his official visit with the Ducks. Moore chose Oregon over USC. “It came as a bit of a surprise,” Moore’s AAU coach Corey Albertson said. “They sent him home with scholarship papers and his mother will sign them over the weekend.” Moore will not sign a letter of intent since he had previously signed one with Duquesne in November. Two factors worked in Oregon’s favor. A Ducks’ assistant coach previously coach at Cincinnati and knew Moore well, and Moore has a close friend on the Oregon football team.

6-6 Sheldon Jeter of Beaver Falls, PA announced Thursday night he will play his college basketball in the SEC. Jeter said he will sign with Vanderbilt. He chose the Commodores over SEC rival USC, home state Penn State and Wisconsin.

Mangus pays a visit to QB Kevin Olsen

Kevin Olsen

USC quarterbacks coach GA Mangus is scheduled to visit with QB Kevin Olsen of Wayne, NJ Thursday according to Olsen’s father, who is also his coach. Mangus was in New Jersey to speak at a clinic Wednesday according to Chris Olsen. Alabama, Connecticut and Maryland were by the school Wednesday. Miami will be in next week along with Auburn. The top four with Olsen remain USC, Miami, Auburn and Wisconsin. “I think he likes what he’s seen and feels very comfortable at all four of those schools,” Coach Olsen said. “GA is coming in and we’re going to talk. We had a great, great visit with him (at USC) and he’ll reiterate a few things and just chat. He’s not going to throw. GA was at the state championship game (last December) so he’s seen him throw.” Coach Olsen said the decision from his son will come sooner than previously noted. “He’s not going to go past the end of school which for us is June 22nd,” he said. There is no leader for Olsen according to his father.

In 2010, LB Brandon Golson (6-2 230) thought he was going to USC after his outstanding senior season at Calhoun County High School. Golson signed with the Gamecocks but the school did not admit him. Golson enrolled at Fork Union Prep, VA but when USC did not readily take him back, he enrolled at Louisville. There, he got 18 hours of credits but was ruled ineligible to play after the testing service negated his score. Golson then enrolled at Georgia Military JC where he played last season and will play again this season. Golson would like to come back close to home and apparently he’s going to have that chance. Golson said Wednesday night USC has offered him. “He wants to come back to USC, he told me, if they offered,” Golson’s former high school coach Walt Wilson said. “He said I can play 35 minutes from my house and in the best conference in the country.” Golson said Kansas and Middle Tennessee State also have offered and he’s also drawing interest from Tennessee and Kansas State. Golson said he’s on track to graduate in December.

Mangus on road checking out quarterback targets

Boeing Brown

USC quarterbacks coach GA Mangus will travel to the Northeast this week to visit with QB target Kevin Olsen of Wayne, NJ. Olsen was named the top prospect last weekend at the Elite 11 regional competition in New York. Mangus will watch Olsen throw and then visit with him and his father. Olsen is down to USC, Miami, Wisconsin and Auburn. Miami was in last week and Auburn will be in next week. Miami appears to be the team to beat with Olsen at this point. One of his brothers played for the Hurricanes. While in the Northeast, Mangus may try to see Boeing Brown of Brookfield, CT. Mangus has not offered Brown but has been evaluating him. Brown attended a junior day and the spring game at USC. Brown also has recently visited Central Florida and Florida and plans to visit Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Indiana and Purdue. Connor Mitch of Raleigh does have a Mangus offer and has USC in his top four along with LSU, North Carolina and Alabama. Mitch also attended a USC junior day and the spring game. But North Carolina is making a strong push for Mitch. One of his teammates has already committed to the Tar Heels, and his girlfriend will be going to Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels appear to making the strongest pressure pitch for Mitch at this point. Mitch also has developed a strong relationship with LSU coach Les Miles and the Tigers quarterbacks coach. And Alabama coach Nick Saban has made a strong move on Mitch after losing quarterback Phillip Sims to a transfer.

DE Devante Covington (6-3 220) of Rockingham, NC became USC’s 8th commitment for the 2013 class Monday night when he made his pledge to recruiter Shawn Elliott. Elliott visited with Covington last week. Covington also visited USC earlier in the spring. He also had offers from Clemson, Tennessee, East Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest. “South Carolina seems on the rise in the SEC and I want to be a part of it,” Covington said. “I want to be a pass rusher and I give a lot of effort just like they do. Everybody on the team has a great attitude. It’s a great place to be around the players. And the facilities are really good.” Last season Covington had 34 tackles and 8 sacks. The Gamecocks are also recruiting his teammate OL Tyrone Crowder and the two have talked about going to the same school. “We are close, and we both want to be close to home, but I don’t know what he wants to do,” Covington said.
