SportsTalk Rewind 6.24.11: L.A. Laker Andrew Goudelock

That title changed as of last night, following the NBA draft.  What used to be “College of Charleston’s Andrew Goudelock” officially became “L.A. Laker’s Andrew Goudelock.”  The former College of Charleston star was selected by one of the most storied franchises in the world, with the 46th pick in the 2nd round.

Andrew Goudelock

Goudelock took some time out tonight with us to take us through the emotional rollercoaster of waiting to hear your name called to be selected by an NBA franchise.  He also detailed the strenuous process that takes place before the draft, and what it take for some guys to build their resume with particular suitors.

So what’s next?  At what position do the Lakers foresee him playing?  Goudelock played 2-guard in college, but has been transitioning to the 1 in all of the pre-draft camps and combines he’s attended.  If you think we didn’t ask the obvious (You? Kobe Bryant? Thoughts?), you’re dead wrong.

SportsTalk Rewind 5.03.11: Washington Wizards Trevor Booker

Tonight we had the pleasure of welcoming in former Clemson Star Forward, Trevor Booker.  Trevor is coming off his rookie season with the Washington Wizards in which he averaged 5 pts and 4 rebs.  Trevor eventually started a couple of games, but broke his foot in late March.

AUDIO: Trevor Booker

Trevor along with Wizards’ teammate, Josh Howard, will be cohosting ”The Trevor Booker & Josh Howard Tru-Ballers 5 on 5 Basketball Tournament”, June 9-12 (Thursday-Sunday)  at Springfield Park, in Mauldin S.C.  Rumor has it Wizards teammates Andray Blatche, and John Wall, will also be sponsoring their own teams while in town for the tournament.  Trevor was inspired by attending a basketball tournament at the exact same park as a youngster, hosted by Kevin Garnett.  Registration is open until May 25, and there is also a $5,000 prize on the line.

Trevor Bookers’ NBA rookie season over

Former Clemson star Trevor Booker was shut down for the remainder of his rookie season with the Washington Wizards Wednesday with a foot injury.

Booker was the #23 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but was traded to the Washington Wizards.  He appeared in 65 games for the Wizards while starting 14, averaging 5.3 points and 3.9 boards per game.  Booker shot 54.9% from the field and was second on the team with 42 blocked shots.

Trevor Booker finished his Clemson career ranked 4th in scoring with 1,725 points, 3rd in rebounding with 1,060, and 4th in blocked shots with 249.  He was also selected to the All-ACC Defensive Team twice and never missed a start during his 134 game career with the Tigers.

Former A.C. Flora star Corbin takes over as Utah Jazz coach

Columbia native Tyrone Corbin will make his NBA head coaching debut tonight when the Utah Jazz play host to the Phoenix Suns.  Corbin is replacing longtime Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan who abruptly resigned yesterday after 22 seasons in Utah.  Team officials say Corbin doesn’t have an interim tag and will be the team’s head coach on a permanent basis.

Corbin is 48 years old and played his high school ball at A.C. Flora High School and played his college ball at DePaul.  He was drafted by the Spurs in 1985 and played for nine teams over his 16 year NBA career.

Corbin has been an assistant in Utah for the past seven seasons.

South Carolina natives Garnett and Allen lead Celtics over Heat

Hey, Miami, South Carolina’s “Big Two” are better than your “Big Three”!   They were last night anyway.  Palmetto State native Ray Allen dropped 20 points and Kevin Garnett added t10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Boston Celtics to an 88-80 win over the grotesquely overhyped Miami Heat.

Yeah, it is just one game but it was pretty sweet to see LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh lay an egg to start the season.  I saw one over/under for Heat wins this season at 72.  I’ll take the under.  Here’s another over/under: 50.  That is the number of games until the Pat Riley replaces Erik Spoelstra as the Heat’s head coach.  I’ll take the under there too.

After the game Garnett astutely pointed out that, while talented, the Heat were severely lacking in the chemistry department.  That will certainly improve as the season progresses, but I for one am not convinced it will improve enough to beat the established Celtics, Lakers or Magic in a seven game playoff series.  Chicago could have something for Miami too.

At least LeBron has a spiffy new commercial to play up just how poorly he’s been treated since “The (bad) Decision” over the summer.
