NFL scouts like Ryan Steed

Furman All-America cornerback Ryan Steed has accepted an invitation to play in the 2012 Senior Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 28 at Mobile, Alabama’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium, it has been confirmed.

Kickoff for the NFL Network televised game is set for 4:00 p.m. EST.

Steed, who was recently named to the AFCA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-America Team, is the third Furman Paladin to earn an invitation to the Senior Bowl and first since running back Stanford Jennings (1984). Furman quarterback Billy Canty (1962) was the first Paladin to play in the annual collegiate senior showcase since its inception in 1950.

Steed totaled 46 tackles, four interceptions, and four pass deflections in a 2011 campaign that also featured a 48-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Elon. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native (Pinewood Prep) and three-time All-SoCon selection finished his Paladin tenure with 180 tackles and tallied 38 passes defensed and 14 interceptions, the third and fourth best marks, respectively, in Paladin football history. He returned three pickoffs for touchdowns, forced four fumbles, recovered three fumbles, recorded a sack, and blocked three kicks in his career.

The Senior Bowl is football’s premier pre-draft event, annually featuring the country’s best senior collegiate football stars and top NFL draft prospects on teams representing the North and South which are coached by the entire coaching staffs from two National Football League teams.

Last year all 107 Senior Bowl participants signed with NFL teams, and 83 players from the 2011 game were selected in the NFL Draft, including 12 first round picks.

Tonight we welcomed into the program, Head Football Coach of the Furman Paladins, Bruce Fowler. Coach Fowler has a big one coming up Saturday, as they host perennial FCS power, Appalachian State. App State is always good, but it just so happens they’re also coming off of their biggest win of the season, beating top ranked and previously undefeated Georgia Southern. We discuss the big game with Coach, and also talk a little Southern Conference race as well.

Furman’s Short named SoCon special teams player of the week

Furman place kicker Chas Short has been selected as the Southern Conference special teams player of the week. Short scored 10 of the Paladins 16 points ina a 16-6 win at rival The Citadel Saturday. Short hit field goals of 20, 27 and 46 yards in the game. The 46-yarder was a career long. Short also handled the punting duties and had a 48-yard punt downed inside the Bulldogs five yard line.

After taking a small hiatus, we refueled, got Korn a Gatorade and a Slim Jim (or two) and shipped him off to Greenville for our next stop on our Palmetto Pigskin Tour, The Furman Paladins. The Paladins are in a bit of transition. After being a quality program for 9 seasons in FCS competition under former Head Coach Bobby Lamb, longtime Paladin Assistant, Bruce Fowler, steps in as the head man. Coach Fowler was nice enough to sit down with us to discuss where he feels his program stands at the present time, and what he’s looking for in 2011.

Furman’s Reeves takes SC Amateur crown

Furman’s Austin Reeves (-5) notched a final round 72 on Sunday to edge Inman’s Daniel Stanley by one stroke and capture the 2011 South Carolina Amateur title at Colleton River Plantation’s Dye Course in Bluffton, S.C.

The Greenville, S.C., native and Eastside High School product trailed Stanley by three strokes entering the final round after posting scores of 74-67-70 over the previous three rounds. Stanley struggled with three bogeys on the front nine and a double bogey at No. 9 before Reeves notched back-to-back birdies at No. 10 and No. 11 to help him manage a two-stroke advantage down the stretch. Stanley birdied the final hole, but Reeves recorded a par to capture the one-stroke victory.

“I just tried to make putts down the stretch and not beat myself,” said Reeves, who shot even-par 36 on the front and back nines.

The win marked the first S.C. Amateur title for the rising senior who redshirted for the Paladins this past season after capturing Southern Conference individual medalist honors and leading Furman to the league crown in 2010.

A pair of former Paladin standouts posted strong finishes as Jordan Byrd (E) claimed a share of sixth place and Todd White (+3) tied for ninth place. Furman freshman Josh Chay shot a final round 77 to finish at 11-over par.
