SportsTalk Rewind 7.07.11: Corbin Mills

He’s been tearing it up on the links as of late, so we decided to get him on the air and get a word with him.  Corbin Mills is coming off a win at the “US Amateur Public Links tourney”, and is now back in the state, in Bluffton  competing in the “Players Amateur”.

We go into the details of Corbin having to overcome his many travails to win the Public Links tourney (including a battle with not only pink-eye, but an ear infection so bad he couldn’t even hear out of his left ear).  Furthermore, we discuss what’s going right with his game (obviously a lot), and how it feels to know that he’s now got himself a ticket to Augusta.

Newberry College golfer Stanley honored

Daniel Stanley

Newberry College men’s golfer Daniel Stanley put the wraps on a stellar collegiate career Friday, as he earned PING Division II Second Team All-American honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America. This marks Stanley’s second career All-America honor, as he was a third team All-American in 2010.

Stanley earned all-Southeast Region honors from the GCAA earlier this week, marking his third all-region honor. The Inman, S.C., native was the South Atlantic Conference champion in 2010 and 2011 and earned all-SAC honors in all four seasons.

Stanley was Newberry College’s first-ever golf All-American with his third team honor in 2010, and now becomes the Wolves’ first two-time All-American. Stanley finished his senior season with 25 rounds, a 72.4 stroke average and 15 rounds at or below par. He ranks second in Newberry history with 100 career rounds and a school-record 72.8 career stroke average.

During Stanley’s 100 career rounds, he played in the 2008 and 2011 NCAA Division II National Tournaments, with the Wolves earning a program- and conference-best quarterfinal finish in 2011. The Wolves qualified for the NCAA Division II Super Regional Tournament in all four seasons and earned three SAC Tournament championships. Newberry won 10 tournament titles during Stanley’s time in the scarlet and gray.

Clemson’s Swinney has nation’s best APR

Dabo has a smart team

A study by cbssports.com shows that Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney is number-one in the nation among active Football Bowl Subdivision coaches in terms of Academic Progress Rate.

The site compiled the APR averages for 109 of the 120 FBS coaches using data provided by the NCAA from the 2003-04 academic year through this past year. (The 11 coaches in their rookie year in 2011 were not included because they have not worked a full season.)

Swinney’s average APR since he became Clemson head coach in 2008 is 988, best in the nation and two points ahead of second place Pat Fitzgerald of Northwestern. Ken Niumatalolo of Navy is third with a 981 score, while Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech is fourth at 980.

The data is coach specific. The scores are based on a perfect score of 1000 for the statistic that rates the progress of student-athletes through their career, leading towards graduation.

“There is no secret formula,” said Swinney. “It’s just a total commitment from all aspects of the administration, the coaching staff and the players. You must have really good policies that everyone understands. We have that here. Everyone is on the same page. It’s black and white.”

The website also computed the APR scores for each conference and the ACC had the top average at 961.7. Four of the top eight coaches nationally are from the ACC. In addition to Swinney and Johnson, Frank Spaziani of Boston College is seventh (978) and David Cutcliffe of Duke is eighth (976).
