Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney come up short in golf tournament

Steve Spurrier and Sterling Sharp finished at six under

The Chick-Fil-A Bowl Challenge is in the books and once again Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson and Jon Barry have won the battle on the golf course. The Ramblin’ Wreck duo defended their title by posting a -10 par on the board. That ended up being one stroke better than Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher and Terrell Buckley.

USC’s duo of Steve Spurrier and Sterling Sharp, who have twice won this tournament, finished at -6 today. This was Spurrier’s first completive round of golf since his knee replacement surgery last year.

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Steve Fuller finished at -1.

Today’s challenge featured a lot of the big college football coaches names, including Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Al Golden and Jim Grobe.

There have been no reports of Saban yelling at anyone or Meyer committing a recruiting violation during today’s round.  We will keep you posted.

For winning today, Johnson and Barry will receive 125,000 dollars to go towards scholarships at Georgia Tech.

Finally we can analyze any team or conference attendance averages!

SEC fans are known to show up in droves

What did we do before the Internet came along to help us find all sorts of new ways to cut down on real life productivity? I mean do we really NEED a place to compare and contrast the five year attendance averages of any school or conference in college football? No, I suppose we don’t. But will we totally waste ten minutes of our life plugging different schools and conferences to see how they vary? You betcha!

Datafyme.com normally spends its time analyzing numbers for “unimportant” things like government spending trends and large magnitude earthquakes. Finally they have created something every red blooded American needs: A statistical breakdown of various schools and conferences attendance.

Just in case you are too lazy to play with this yourself, I will share a few of the results I received in comparing Clemson and USC and the ACC and SEC attendance averages over the past five years (’06-’11):

  • Clemson averaged 78,090 per home game, which is at 97.25% capacity.
  •  USC 77,632 per home game, which is 96.68% capacity.
  • The SEC averaged 75,040 fans in its home games. That is 95.63% of its capacity.
  • The ACC averaged 55,436 fans per home game, which is 86.21% capacity.

USC still searching for backup quarterback (AUDIO)

Steve Spurrier is still undecided on who will back up Connor Shaw this season

South Carolina had its final spring practice this afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium, as the Gamecocks prepare for their spring game on Saturday afternoon.

Carolina practiced in helmets and shorts, as head coach Steve Spurrier hoped to emerge from the day with his team relatively healthy. Spurrier continued to bemoan his quarterbacks’ tendency to hold the ball too long, which he said led to several turnovers throughout the day.

As far as the quarterback rotation on Saturday, Spurrier said that starter Connor Shaw is expected to see around 15-20 snaps before his day will be done. The rest of the snaps will be split between the rest of the quarterbacks on the roster.

The job of backup quarterback appears to be a two-horse race, as Dylan Thompson and Seth Strickland are battling for the position. Both are expected to see plenty of reps on Saturday.

South Carolina’s spring game will start Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.

Clemson struggles with consistency in scrimmage (AUDIO)

Dabo Swinney wants to see more consistency from his team

By: Rixon Lane

The Clemson Tigers scrimmaged again today, and head coach Dabo Swinney is still looking for consistency on both sides of the ball.

Swinney said that the squad is still not performing consistently at a high level, including starting quarterback Tajh Boyd, who Swinney mentioned by name as not having a consistent spring. However, Swinney did say that Boyd had “one of his better days” at today’s scrimmage.

The offense improved throughout the scrimmage, according to Swinney, despite turning the ball over twice. Offensive coordinator Chad Morris called the turnovers “unacceptable,” but said the offense responded well, putting together several long drives.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers started strong, but faltered late in the scrimmage. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said he wants to see his defense have more of “an attitude” and a “sense of desperation.”

Clemson will have its spring game this Saturday at 4:00.

From Clemson SID:

Clemson, SC—Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had 160 receiving yards to key the offense, and linebackers Corico Hawkins and Tig Willard had seven tackles apiece to lead the defense during a football scrimmage at Clemson Memorial Stadium on Monday.
It was the final full scrimmage for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers prior to Saturday’s Spring Game at Death Valley at 4 PM.  Admission is free and there will be no live television of the game. The game will be broadcast on the Clemson radio network.

Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney was please with his squad’s performance. “We showed improvement in a lot of areas, but we are still not consistent enough overall.
“The defense started fast and the offense started slowly, then it switched the second half of the practice.
“Tajh Boyd got better today.  He responded and showed some leadership.  He made a couple of mistakes early (two interceptions), but came back to have one of his better days.
“The player of the day was Nuke Hopkins.  He has been the epitome of consistency.  He has played all spring like you need to play to be a top 10 program.  I was also pleased with Rod McDowell, and Tony McNeal had a good day, perhaps his best day of the spring.  Matt Porter is a walk-on with four years of eligibility and you are going to hear about him
“The offensive line did some good things.  Kalon Davis continues to improve and I think Tyler Shatley can be a difference maker.
“Defensive, Grady Jarrett has been consistent in the trenches along with DeShawn Williams.  Justin Parker is coming along at linebacker. He has been fun to watch improve and he is instinctive.   I am also excited about Bashaud Breeland and Darius Robinson in the secondary.  Darius has responded to competing against Sammy Watkins in practice.  Sammy is making Darius better each day.”

Boyd finished  the day 13-20 for 214 yards and a touchdown, a 13-yard scoring pass to Hopkins. He also completed an 89-yard pass to Hopkins coming off the goal line.  McNeal completed 3-7-76 yards, including a 54-yard scoring pass to Matt Porter.  Cole Stoudt was 4-7 for 31 yards and Morgan Roberts was 4-8-42 yards.

Andre Ellington led the rushers with six carries for 93 yards, while Rod McDowell had 7-49, including a 15-yard touchdown run.  Zac Brooks, a first-year freshman who entered in January, had five rushes for 26 yards. D.J. Howard had 5-17 rushing and Mike Bellamy had 7-17 rushing and a seven-yard reception.

Hopkins had 160 yards receiving on six receptions, while Sammy Watkins had 6-56.  Stanton Seckinger had four catches for 42 yards and Eric Mac Lain had 2-30. Porter had the 54-yard touchdown catch, plus two rushes for 25 yards.

The defense was led by the  aforementioned Hawkins and Williard  combination in the tackle department.  Parker had five tackles, as did defensive lineman Josh Watson.  Watson also had two tackles for loss, including a sack.  Corey Crawford had four tackles, including a sack, while DeShawn Williams had four tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Travis Blanks, a true freshman from Tallahassee, FL,  had a 27-yard interception return and senior Xavier Brewer also had an interception. Malliciah Goodman had a sack and a force fumble.

New name emerging at defensive back for Gamecocks (AUDIO)

Jared Shaw continues to impress during spring practice

By: Rixon Lane

The Gamecocks returned to the practice fields today, and while the offense still wasn’t quite to the level Steve Spurrier would like it to be, one member of the defensive unit did stand out.

After returning an interception for a touchdown in last Saturday’s scrimmage, Jared Shaw blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown today. Spurrier said that Shaw is currently in the running for a starting spot at cornerback.

Although the defense tallied another turnover with Damario Jeffrey’s interception, Spurrier seemed more pleased with the play of his quarterbacks than he has in recent practices. Dylan Thompson led the offense on a drive and Tanner McEvoy hooked up with Damiere Byrd for a long completion.

The Gamecocks will resume practice next Tuesday.
