Former Clemson associate head coach Rick Ray was introduced as the new head basketball coach at Mississippi State today. Ray spent the past two seasons as the top assistant at Clemson before accepting job in Starkville.

Ray replaces Rick Stansbury, who retired in March after leading the Bulldogs for 14 seasons. He is expected to remain with the athletic department in some capacity. Mississippi State made the NIT this season, but fell in the first round to Massachusetts.

The 40-year-old Ray also spent time at Purdue, Northern Illinois, and Indiana State before joining the staff at Clemson. According to Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin, Ray’s contract is for four years and worth around one million dollars per season.

College of Charleston basketball coach Bobby Cremins retires (AUDIO)

By: Rixon Lane

Bobby Cremins

College of Charleston head coach Bobby Cremins announced his retirement today after 31 seasons of coaching. Cremins spent time as the head coach of Appalachian State and Georgia Tech before taking over the Cougars in 2006.

Cremins announced on January 27th that he would miss the remainder of this season due to exhaustion. The Cougars went 7-4 without Cremins on the sideline.

Cremins made eleven trips to the NCAA Tournament in his career, ten of which came with Georgia Tech, including three Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight trip. The Yellow Jackets named their home court after Cremins in 2003.

College of Charleston athletics director Joe Hull says the school will conduct a national search for its next head basketball coach. The Cougars finished this season with a 19-12 record, snapping a streak of three consecutive seasons with at least twenty wins.

Barack Obama doesn’t think USC women will advance to Sweet 16

Barack Obama

Good thing South Carolina isn’t a swing state.

President Barack Obama expects the USC women’s basketball team to beat Eastern Michigan tomorrow, but the Leader of the Free World doesn’t think the Gamecocks will get by Purdue in the second round. The President has made it a tradition to fill out a bracket for the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament each year. On his women’s bracket he took all of the higher seeds through the first two rounds. Purdue is hosting the first two rounds and would be a heavy favorite over USC should both teams advance.

Obama has Baylor winning the women’s national title.

USC will play Eastern Michigan tomorrow, with the tip coming shortly after 11:00. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Wofford, Coastal Carolina, USC Upstate earn postseason bids

Mike Young and Wofford are in the CBI

No state teams earned a bid into the NCAA or NIT tournaments, but there are a few that are in lower tier postseason tournament fields.

Wofford, a program that has been in the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons, is in the CBI field. The Terriers will play at Pittsburg Wednesday in the opening round. No start time has been announced. The winner will play the winner of Princeton-Evansville in the second round.

Coastal Carolina will face Old Dominion University in the first round of the fourth annual CollegeInsider.com Tournament tomorrow night. The game tips at 7:00 in Norfolk, Virginia. USC Upstate actually has a home game in the CIT. The Spartans face Kent State Thursday night at 7:00 in Spartanburg.

Clemson, College of Charelston, and Charleston Southern opted not to pursue these tournaments.
