Gilmore signs 4-year deal with Buffalo (AUDIO)

Stephon Gilmore, former USC cornerback, signed a 4-year contract worth around $12 million with the Buffalo Bills today. Gilmore was selected in the first round and tenth overall by the Bills in the 2012 NFL Draft. In four practices during the Bills’ minicamp, Gilmore has recorded several pass break ups, one interception, and has made a good impression on Buffalo head coach, Chan Gailey. Chris Brown from Buffalobills.com spoke with Gilmore shortly after he signed.

Gilmore played three seasons with the Gamecocks recording 176 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, seven sacks, and eight interceptions. Gilmore was a first-team All-SEC selection and third-team AP All-American following the 2010 season. In his final game at USC against Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl, Gilmore recorded an interception and returned a block PAT for two-point defensive conversion.

Throughout the summer SportsTalk is taking a trip around the country to preview the opponents of both USC and Clemson for the 2012 football season.  For the 2nd game of the of the upcoming season, the Clemson Tigers will be welcoming the Ball State Cardinals to Memorial Stadium on September 8th.  Doug Zaleski, beat writer for the Star Press in Muncie Indiana joined us tonight for a couple of minutes to preview the Cardinals.

Ball State hit the .500 mark right on the dot last year, going 6-6 in 2011.  Doug believes the Cardinals will be an improved team in 2012, especially on the offensive side of the ball.  The biggest concern for the Cardinals is the fact that even though their defense should be improved, they have such a long way to go, having given up over 40 points a game in 5 games last season.  Doug examines both sides of the ball for us in detail…

 

Ray Tanner previews Gamecocks final week of regular season (AUDIO)

Tonight Phil was broadcasting live from the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony in downtown Columbia.  Prior to the festivities getting underway, Phil had the opportunity to sit down with someone in attendance that might be enshrined one day himself, USC Head Baseball Coach, Ray Tanner.

Coach Tanner took some time to talk about former USC Coach, June Raines, as well as Clemson legendary baseball coach, Bill Wilhelm, both of which were inducted into tonight’s Hall of fame class. 

Tanner also talked business.  His team moved up in some polls (#1 in the NCBWA poll) and is headed into the final week of the regular season.  The Gamecocks host USC Upstate tomorrow night at 7:00 and then welcome LSU to Columbia for a 3 game series starting Thursday.

In the VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200, Joey Logano picked up his third Nationwide Series win this year and Jimmie Johnson gave Hendrick Motorsports their 200th win with a victory in the Bojangles Southern 500. The Sprint Cup Series will be at Charlotte Motor Speedway next Saturday, May 19th for the Sprint All-Star Race.

SportsTalk Rewind 5.14.12: June Raines (AUDIO)

June Raines, former USC baseball coach, is inducted in the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

The South Carolina Radio Network and SportsTalk was on hand at the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and caught up with one of the most succesful USC head coaches ever. June Raines coached USC baseball from 1977-96, replacing Bobby Richardson, and finished his tenure as the program’s all-time winningest coach at the time with a 763-380-2 record in 20 years.  Tonight, Raines officially became a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.  Before the induction ceremony got underway tonight, Raines sat down with Phil to talk about the honor.

Raines took the Gamecocks to four College World Series (1977, ‘81, ’82 & ‘85), and finished as runner-up in 1977. Overall, he led Carolina to 11 NCAA tournaments and won four Regionals. He also had nine 40-win seasons and during the 1980s witnessed the program’s most successful run during his tenure as the Gamecocks made eight NCAA Tournaments, including seven straight from 1980-1986.
