We just spoke with Captain Eric Hendricks of the Clemson University Police department. He told us the reason why no charges or arrest were made in the case involving Clemson wide receiver Joe Craig and his track teammate Marlena Wesh was because neither wanted to press charges.
“Neither one wanted to press charges and we respect the wish of the victim,” Hendricks told SportsTalk.
Hendricks said both refused EMT transport to the hospital. Clemson track coaches took the two to Oconne Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released. Hendricks said the police did not call the coaches to the scene. He said other teammates made that call.
When pressed if the arresting officers or the police department could legally pursue charges against the two Hendricks repeated his “respect the wish of the victim” statement. He said in this case both Craig and Wesh were the victims.
Both Craig and Wesh signed papers stating they did not wish to press charges. According the police report they said the fact they were teammates and didn’t want bad publicity as the reason why. They also called the incident “minor”.
The coaches taking them to hospital could be a NCAA violation since the injury was not athletic related. I am not sure but this could be considered as an extra benefit that a regular student would not recieve.
