Recruiting Report 6.30.11

DL Eddie Goldman of Washington, DC made an unofficial visit to USC Thursday along with a member of his coaching staff and parents.  Goldman met up with recruiter GA Mangus and defensive assistant coaches Brad Lawing and Lorenzo Ward. USC is one of the 15 schools still on his list.  Also on that list are Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Oklahoma, Virginia and California.

TE Kelvin Rainey (6-3 210) of Yulee, FL committed to USC Thursday afternoon picking the Gamecocks over Georgia and Miami after narrowing his decision down to a final three. Rainey had favored the Gamecocks throughout most of the recruiting season and figured there was no reason to wait any longer on the decision. “I just have too good of a relationship with South Carolina,” Rainey said. “I like everything about them…the coaches, the academics, the facilities, how they handle themselves.” Rainey is a good, overall athlete who can play several positions, but he said USC wants him as a tight end. “I can fit right in when I go there,” he said. “They see me as a tight end or receiver, someone who can create mismatches. It sounds really good. It’s the same thing we’re going on my high school team.” Last season Rainey had 30 catches for 450 yards and 7 touchdowns. He’s the 9th commitment for the Gamecocks’ 2012 class.

OL Joe Harris of Lithonia, GA plans to make an unofficial visit to USC Friday. This will be a return trip to USC for Harris who actually grew up in Spartanburg. He visited Clemson earlier in the June and he is scheduled to visit Oregon State early next week. He camped at Alabama earlier this month. Harris has offers from USC, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Florida and others. He has indicated USC and Clemson will be among the schools he considers thru the process.

USC had been in pursuit of WR Chris Black of Jacksonville and for a while it appeared the Gamecocks stood a good chance to get him. But Black told the fan website FightinGators.com that he is down to a final three of Florida, Florida State and Alabama. Black recently camped at Florida State and plans to visit Florida and Alabama again before making his decision. Black said his decision will be coming soon.

DB Devon Miller (5-9 165) of Riverdale, GA has offers from USC and Appalachian State. He is hearing from Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern and will visit each school next month. “The Charleston Southern coach says he really wants to meet me,” Miller said. ‘It will be my first visit to both places.” Other schools showing interest in Miller are Kentucky and Southern Miss. “I’m going to visit Kentucky during the season,” he said. “I may just make it an official visit.” He wants to visit USC and Appalachian State as well. “I really haven’t heard much from South Carolina lately,” Miller added. He listed his top five as Appalachian State, Kentucky, Southern Miss, USC and Coastal Carolina in that order.

TE Ryan Morris (6-6 248) of Barnegat, NJ committed to Purdue Monday choosing the Boilermakers over USC, Duke, Syracuse, Louisville, Illinois, Indiana and Central Florida among others. “It just felt right when I was there,” Morris said. “I talked to the coaches and players, of course, and it felt like the place for me.” Morris was planning to visit USC at some point prior to making his decision. “It’s pretty firm,” he said. “Purdue is where I’m going.” He did not rule out other possible visits in his future, including USC, but did say it was unlikely. As a junior, he had 30 catches for 496 yards and four touchdowns.

Clemson baseball final notes

Justin Sarratt

Clemson baseball SID Brian Hennesy released the final notes for the Clemson baseball team this afternoon.  You can read a portion of them here or go to the Tigers homepage to see all of them.

Tigers Earned 36th NCAA Tournament Bid

Clemson played in its 36th all-time NCAA Regional in 2011. The 36 appearances are tied for fifth-most in NCAA history, trailing only Texas (55), Florida State (49), Miami (FL) (40), and Oklahoma State (38).

Clemson Regional Recap

The Tigers hosted the 2011 Clemson Regional and went 2-2, finishing in second place behind regional champion Connecticut, who went 4-1. Clemson defeated Sacred Heart and Coastal Carolina before falling twice to the Huskies.

Clemson batted .314 with a .486 slugging percentage and .414 on-base percentage in the four regional games. The team also totaled 30 runs, 44 hits, seven doubles, one triple, five homers, 24 walks against only 21 strikeouts, and five stolen bases. John Hinson (3B), Will Lamb (OF), and Phil Pohl (DH) earned all-tournament honors as well.

Clemson’s NCAA Tournament Leaders

John Hinson led the Tigers in the Clemson Regional by going 8-for-17 (.471) with seven runs, one double, two homers, six RBIs, three walks, and two stolen bases. Will Lamb was 6-for-15 (.400) with six runs, one triple, one homer, two RBIs, and two walks. Phil Pohl went 7-for-18 (.389) with two runs, three doubles, and one RBI. Jason Stolz and Richie Shaffer both went 5-for-13 (.385), while Shaffer added one double, two homers, five RBIs, four walks, and one steal.

Worth Noting

• The 2011 season marked Clemson’s 47th consecutive winning season.

• Clemson won seven weekend series in a row to close the regular season. The Tigers, who were 2-1 in the ACC Tournament, also won each of their last six ACC series and seven of the 10 ACC series in 2011.

• Clemson lost its 20 games by a combined 67 runs (3.4 runs per loss). The Tigers won their 43 games by a combined 269 runs (6.3 runs per win). That was a big reason Clemson was fifth in the nation in scoring margin (+3.2), trailing only Virginia, Vanderbilt, Stony Brook, and Mercer.

• Clemson hit .336 with runners in scoring position.

• Fourteen Tigers combined for a .321 batting average off the bench. Meanwhile, Clemson opponents had a .177 batting average off the bench.

• All of Clemson’s nine regulars in the field batted .282 or better, including six starters who batted .315 or better.

• Clemson relievers combined for a 2.69 ERA and .225 opponents’ batting average.

• Clemson pitchers combined for a 1.52 ERA and .188 opponents’ batting average along with 61 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched in the ninth inning.

Polls

The Tigers ended the year at #16 in the final Sports Weekly coaches poll after going 2-2 in four games in the Clemson Regional to close their season. Clemson also finished at #21 in the Baseball America rankings and #21 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Clemson has had at least one final top-25 ranking in 15 of Head Coach Jack Leggett’s first 18 seasons in Tigertown. The Tigers have also been ranked #1 for 20 weeks by at least one of the three major polls under Leggett. Their last #1 ranking came on February 12, 2007 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.

Clemson makes top ten scandals list

This photo earned Clemson a spot on the scandal list

During the summer the national media enjoys making a top ten list of about everything. It ranges from coaches on the hot seat, to the top Heisman contenders, to top incoming freshman. Anything you can think of probably has been or will be turned into a top ten list.

The good folks over at ESPN Page 2 put together a list of the top ten football scandals of the 2011 offseason. Clemson fans won’t be happy to learn that the Tigers are ninth on the list.

Here is what DJ Gallo wrote about the Tigers:

In early June, Tigers recruit Mike Bellamy posted a picture on Facebook of himself posing with a huge wad of $100 bills. Hmm. Peculiar. He later claimed it was a joke. But most high school students don’t have access to piles of $100 bills, even for joking purposes. And this came three years after Clemson recruit Kenneth Page put a photo on MySpace — remember that (I mean MySpace, not the photo)? — of himself holding a stack of cash. So either Clemson is paying its top recruits or it is recruiting players who have had wildly successful paper routes and/or lemonade stand businesses.

How they could have improved their ranking: By having recruits tweet pictures of themselves holding cash. Come on, Facebook? If you want something to go viral, Twitter is the way. Someone better check out Friendster to see if Clemson recruits are putting incriminating photos on there.

SportsTalk Rewind 6.29.11: Former USC 1B Trey Dyson

Throughout USC’s postseason baseball run, SportsTalk welcomed in our good friend, Trey Dyson, to provide the big time college baseball analysis that our listenership deserves.

AUDIO: Trey Dyson

Trey Dyson

Trey is obviously no stranger to the USC program, is well aware of parts known as “Omaha”, and possesses the unique ability to take you inside the mind that is USC Head Coach, Ray Tanner. Trey has led us thus far for postseason baseball analysis, tonight was Mr. Dyson’s time to provide his (surely not biased) garnet colored exclamation mark.

SportsTalk Rewind 6.29.11: Braves Report

All season long SportsTalk is committed to bringing you comprehensive coverage of the Atlanta Braves.  Our friend, Mike Morgan, of the Braves Radio Network, joins us to break down what’s happening with Braves baseball.

AUDIO: Braves Report

Tonight the boys assess the Braves marching up to Seattle (we’ll let you do the mileage), and sweeping their 3-game series against the Mariners.  Beachy, Hanson, and Lowe solidified themselves out west as big time backend arms in the rotation, behind Jair Jurrjens, to equip this team with the tools to make a playoff push.  Also up for discussion, the advent of speed, and a potential new weapon to help this team score runs henceforth.
