G.A. Mangus
USC quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus is being mentioned as a potential candidate for the Temple head coaching job. Mangus does have ties to the Philadelphia area. He was the offensive coordinator at Division III Ursinus and was the head coach at Division II Delaware Valley College.
Interesting side note, two years ago while vacationing in Mexico I met a professor from Delaware Valley College. When I told him I was from South Carolina the first person he asked me about was G.A. Mangus. He proceeded to spend the next 10 minutes telling me what a great coach Mangus was and how he turned the Delaware College football team into a solid program. This professor wasn’t friends with Mangus, in fact he said he hardly knew him, he was just impressed with the job Mangus did with the football team.
At that point I didn’t really know much about Mangus. I was pretty shocked to be in Mexico and hearing about a newly hired Gamecock quarterbacks coach. However, after meeting Mangus and watching him coach the past two seasons, I can see why the professor thought so much of him.
The point of that story is that Mangus is well respected in the Philadelphia area. I’m not saying that he’s respected enough to get the Temple job, but I certainly am not shocked his name has cropped up.
Mangus has not publicly commented on the opening. Former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, and Cincinnati Bengals assistant Paul Guenther have also been mentioned as potential candidates. Current Temple offensive coordinator Matt Rhule has already interviewed for the job.
The Owls are searching for a replacement for Al Golden, who took over at Miami this week.
