A group of reporters caught up with USC coach Steve Spurrier shortly after the formal Chick-Fil-A Bowl press conference to ask him more hard hitting questions than “Will you take a picture with the Chick-fil-A cow?”. Spurrier had some interesting things to say.
AUDIO: Steve Spurrier interview
We asked Spurrier how much longer he plans to coach at USC (around the 4:30 mark in the above interview). His response indicates the HBC isn’t looking to pull an Urban Meyer any time soon.
“I always say four or five[years],” Spurrier said. “I look at four or five. Marcus is a freshman. Man, we got some good recruits coming in we think and we think we are going to get some others. We believe we got an up and coming team here. Like I said all year, I don’t think this is the best team we are going to field. I think we can field a stronger team in the future.”
Spurrier also said that sophomore wide receiver Tori Gurley and junior offensive Rokevious Watkins have filed paperwork for evaluation for the upcoming NFL draft. Gurley is draft eligible as a sophomore because he is over 21 years old. Spurrier said unless they are first rounders, both will be encouraged to return.
Spurrier said the team will change the way it prepares for this year’s bowl game. Carolina has been blown out in its past two bowl game. He did not elaborate, but said it the team will practice differently this year.
Spurrier said there is always a chance that his staff could change because of an assistant taking another job. He didn’t hint that any staff changes were imminent.
