All week Steve Spurrier told his team to “give fate a chance” when they faced top ranked Alabama. It turned out fate was on his team’s side. Just like the USC basketball and baseball teams, the football team now has a win over a top-ranked squad in 2010.

The win is extra special for Spurrier. It is his 107th career SEC win, moving him to second on the all-time conference wins list behind Alabama’s Paul “Bear” Bryant. He was tied with John Vaught for second on the list. Byrant has 159 career SEC wins. Spurrier said it was special to move into second place with a win over Bryant’s old team. Spurrier was so happy about the milestone he actually gave himself a game ball.
With Saturday’s win over Alabama Spurrier is 9-16 against ranked opponents at USC. The Gamecocks are 2-1 against ranked teams this year.
