Beginning of the end? Heritage golf date changed

Word came down today that the annual PGA Tour Heritage golf tournament will be played a week later than usual next year.  The tournament is normally the week after the Masters, which is the second weekend in April.

This year the tournament will tee off on April 21st at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton head.  That is the exact same time the Champions Tour’s Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf is played just down the road in Savannah, GA.

That isn’t a good thing for either tournament.  The Heritage is already fighting hard to find a title sponsor and sharing a weekend with a popular Champions Tour event probably isn’t going to help them find one.

If the Heritage can’t find a sponsor in the next year there is a better than slim chance the tournament could leave the state.  The Heritage is the only PGA Tour stop in South Carolina and it would be a shame to lose it.  It would also be a shame to lose the estimated 82 million dollars of revenue the event brings to the Palmetto State each year.

Here’s hoping it works out.
