Furman’s 2010 season opener against Colgate is still two and a half weeks away, but the Paladins put a wrap on their preseason camp Tuesday afternoon.
“With school starting for us tomorrow, we consider today the end of our preseason camp,” said Paladin head coach Bobby Lamb following his squad’s three-hour practice. “Tomorrow we’ll be on the practice schedule that we’ll pretty much follow for the remainder of the season.”
Highlighting the Paladins’ Tuesday session was 11-on-11 work involving first and second team units, as well as two-minute offense and defense periods.
“We’re starting to narrow our focus and get a real feel on who is ready to play,” said Lamb.
“I thought Cody Worley had his best day of the preseason. We got him in there with the first team, and he really did well, leading the offense on a 65-yard scoring drive.”
Worley, a fifth-year senior, is battling junior Chris Forcier for the starting job vacated by the graduation of Jordan Sorrells.
Furman’s kicking game has also been a focus of competition in the preseason between junior Chas Short and freshman Ray Early.
“Chas kicked two field goals today, and it was good to see Adam Mims back out there with his fresh legs.”
Injuries continue to be a factor for the defense, with starters Josh Lynn (concussion), Kadarron Anderson (hamstring), Ryan Steed (groin) on the sidelines, along with backup linebackers Rick Furman (hamstring) and Matt Solomon (hamstring).
“We should be getting all those guys back in the next few days.”
Furman will practice at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Paladin Stadium.
