One of Newberry College’s own will get to play in front of his hometown fans, as the Atlanta Braves organization has promoted pitcher Thomas Berryhill to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the High-A Carolina League, effective today.

Berryhill most recently pitched for the Rome Braves of the Low-A South Atlantic League, where he recorded a 3-1 record and five saves with a 3.80 ERA. He pitched 45.0 innings in 31 appearances, striking out 30 batters.

A fifth round draft pick by the Braves in 2009, Berryhill played his initial season with the Danville (Va.) Braves of the rookie level Appalachian League, where he was 1-1 and recorded six saves with a 2.55 ERA in 16 appearances with 12 strikeouts in 17.2 innings pitched.

A native of Aynor, S.C., Berryhill will join up with the Pelicans for tonight’s game in Kinston, N.C., before returning to the Grand Strand for an eight-game home stand against the Potomac Nationals and the Frederick Keys from Thursday, August 5, through Thursday, August 12.
