Sumter’s Post 15 wins state Legion championship

The skies finally cleared long enough Wednesday afternoon for Sumter to defeat Murrells Inlet 4-2, capturing their 14th American Legion state championship.

Sumter’s Post 15 will play in the Southeastern Regional Championship next week in Columbia, Tennessee.  This state championship is their fourth title in seven years.

Pitcher Tyler Smith threw a gem for Sumter after replacing their ace Jordan Montgomery in the first inning.  Montgomery suffered a knee injury.  Smith not only pitched well, but also led the team to victory with his bat, driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh.
