USC coach Darrin Horn talks hoops

USC basketball coach Darrin Horn participated in a conference call with his fellow SEC basketball coaches Monday.  I know, we are still trying to finish up the baseball season and we haven’t even pulled the lid off of football season, but I still want to keep all of you loyal hoops fans in the loop.

Horn certainly sounds optimistic heading into year three at USC and is really high on his incoming recruiting class.  The class has been ranked in the top 25 by a few recruiting analyst.

Horn’s  class includes Bruce Ellington (G – 5-10 – 185 – Moncks Corner, S.C./Berkeley High School), Damontre Harris (F – 6-9 – 225 – Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian School), Brian Richardson (G – 6-5 – 180 – Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School), RJ Slawson (F – 6-8 – 190 – Charleston, S.C./Fort Dorchester High School) and Eric Smith (G – 5-11 – 185 – Mullins, S.C./Christ  and Carlton Geathers (F-6-11-260- Georgetown, S.C./Carvers Bay High School.

Former USC DE Geathers inks deal with Browns

Clifton Geathers

Clifton Geathers

Former USC defensive lineman Clifton Geathers has signed a multi-year contract with the Cleveland Browns.  The Browns selected Geathers in the sixth round of this past April’s NFL draft.  He was the 186th overall pick.

The terms of Geathers deal have not been released although one report has the deal worth about two million dollars and including a signing bonus of around 100k.

Geathers  is the first Browns draft pick to agree to terms on a contract.

It looks like Geathers has some lofty expectations in Cleveland.  Check out these comments from Cleveland.com

“They tell me I could be the next Julius [Peppers] or Jumpy Geathers [his uncle].” He also said that with enough hard work and determination, “I’ll be the best player, probably in the league, if I’m able to do that.”

Geathers has some talent for sure, but he needs to stay out of the coaches dog house and avoid throwing any more punches at teammates during practice.  NFL coaches seem to frown on such behavior from rookies drafted in the sixth round.

Based on his swollen face after an incident last summer, I am guessing Geathers has already learned not to mix things up in anymore Columbia nightclubs.

Geathers left USC after his junior year to enter the NFL draft.

Tanner still mulling latest pitching options

Roth could get the ball tonight against UCLA

USC head coach Ray Tanner and pitching coach Mark Calvi have pulled all the right strings throughout this College World Series.  If they can make the right move one more time the Gamecocks will secure their first ever national championship in any MAJOR sport (No disrespect intended to the USC women’s track team or the Gamecock equestrian team.  Both have won titles and I don’t want to offend any women or horses).

Tanner still hasn’t named his starter for tonight’s game against UCLA.  He mentioned after Monday night’s win that he was leaning toward starting a lefty against the Bruins.  Logic would dictate he could hand the ball Michael Roth tonight.  Well, I say logic; I guess it wouldn’t have seemed that logical to start Roth in a potential national title clinching game this time last week.  That was before Roth threw a complete game three hitter against Clemson last Friday in his first start of the season.

Tyler Webb and Nolan Belcher are two other southpaws that Tanner mentioned as potential starters last night.

We do know that UCLA plans to send left hander Rob Rasmussen to the mound tonight.  The junior is 11-3 with a 2.87 ERA this season.  He has struck out 123 batters in just over 103 innings of work.

Braves solve Strasburg riddle

The Braves got their first look at Washington’s young ace pitcher Stephen Strasburg Monday night.  They walked away thoroughly impressed with the young flame thrower.  More importantly they walked away with a 5-0 victory over Strasberg and the Nationals.

Strasburg pitch 6 1/3 innings and gave up six hits and struck out seven.  He ran into trouble in the seventh when he gave up four runs.  Three of those were earned.  The loss drops Strasburg to 2-2 this season.  His ERA moved up to 2.27.

He’s still putting up great numbers for a guy that has only made five starts.  You can see why the Braves were raving about him after the game.

The best pitcher on the field last night was Tim Hudson.  Hudson pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out six.  He lowered his ERA to 2.37 and improved to 8-3 this season.

Last night’s win over Washington combined with the Mets loss to the Marlins extends the Braves lead in the N.L. East standings to 1 ½ games over the Mets.  The Phillies also lost and are now 3  ½ games back.

Atlanta and Washington will play game two of theirs series tonight at 7:10 at Turner Field.
