Gamecocks talk about regional

The USC baseball team will be the #1 seed in their own regional starting Friday afternoon in Columbia.  The Gamecocks will take on 4th seed Bucknell at 7:00 PM.  The day’s first game will pit #2 seed Virginia Tech against #3 The Citadel at 2:00.   The winner of the USC regional will face the winner of the Coastal Carolina regional in the Super Regional next week.

Happy Memorial Day to all of our SportsTalk listeners as we honor all of those who have served our nation.  The NCAA bracket was released today and we have some coaches reactions.  The Braves moved into first place in the division this afternoon as well.

  • The Atlanta Braves defeated the Phillies this afternoon 9-3 at The Ted.  Mike Morgan talked about this victory in today’s Braves Report.

  • Kyle Parker talked about the Tigers ACC tournament and how he played.  He says it has been a long season but that they keep plugging away.

  • Ray Tanner had a press conference yesterday and, afterwards, spent some time with Phil in a one-on-one.

  • Kurt Busch won the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte yesterday and was very pleased with his team’s performance.

USC, Coastal to host baseball regionals

USC and Costal Carolina Sunday were named two of the 16 host teams for the NCAA baseball regionals which begin Friday.   As a host, USC will receive an at large bid to the tournament when the entire field is announce Monday.  Coastal Carolina earned the automatic bid from the Big South Conference by winning the conference tournament Sunday.  This will be USC’s 12th time as a regional host.  Coastal will be hosting for a third time.  The Coastal regional will be played at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, home to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans minor league team. 

Also named as regional hosts Sunday were Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Cal State Fullerton, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, UCLA and Virginia.  The SEC led all conferences with four hosts.  The ACC was next with three.

Norton makes Clemson commitment

OL Ryan Norton of Mauldin committed Friday night to Clemson following his spring game.  Norton had been favoring the Tigers for months.  He also considered offers from Georgia Tech and USC.  Norton plays center for the Mavericks and will be used as an interior lineman with the Tigers.   He’s Clemson’s 10th commitment for the 2011 recruiting class.

SportsTalk wishes you a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend.  The Tigers follow the Gamecocks lead and lose their first two games in the ACC tourney.  They will play Georgia Tech tomorrow night but cannot advance to the championship game on Sunday.
