One of the nicest people you’ve never met

Jill Harrington Hanzalik and NBA commissioner David Stern

Jill Harrington Hanzalik and NBA commissioner David Stern

This isn’t the kind of story we normally post in this space, but I wanted to share it nonetheless.  It is a sports story or, perhaps,  maybe it  more so a life story.  Regardless, it is a story I want to tell.

The call came in about 9:00.  We were eating dinner.  Lauren’s cell phone was buzzing, the caller I.D. read “Jill-work”.  It was her best friend and a call from her usually was followed by an extended conversation that could last longer than a round of golf.

Not tonight.

She didn’t want to be rude and wasn’t going to answer.  I told her it was fine.  Dinner was almost over and I could tell she wanted to talk.  “It’s fine.  Really.  Go ahead, answer.”

Lauren answered.  Within thirty seconds she was in tears. Sobbing uncontrollably.  It wasn’t Jill on the line.

You have never heard of Jill Harrington.  Those of you that have followed ACC and SEC basketball closely for the past several years probably remember her brother, Adam.  Adam Harrington   began his college basketball career at N.C. State, where he played for one season before transferring to Auburn.

Adam was an above average  player.  He was a 6-5 shooting guard with a sweet stroke that quickly helped him make a name for himself in the ACC.   He became the first freshman in N.C. State history to lead the Wolfpack in scoring.  As a wide-eyed freshman he went in to Cameron Indoor Stadium and dropped 26 points on Duke.   He  played so well his first season that he was named to the All-ACC Freshman team.

Adam had some baggage though.  Despite his success at State he decided to transfer to another school.  Rumors flew about why he was leaving and there were some that thought Adam was trolling around with hat in hand.  The questions didn’t stop when he landed at Auburn.

USC’s Dyson earns SEC Pitcher of the Week honors

For the third consecutive week, a South Carolina pitcher has earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors. Junior right-hander Sam Dyson was tabbed the conference pitcher of the week following his three-hit complete game shutout in the seven inning 5-0 win over Georgia on Sunday in game one of a doubleheader. Dyson, Blake Cooper (April 19) and Jay Brown (April 12)have all earned the award in the last three weeks for the Gamecocks.

The South Carolina baseball team has moved up in this week’s rankings with the Gamecocks sitting at No. 3 in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 with a No. 7 ranking in the Baseball America Top 25 & Rivals Top 25 and a No. 8 ranking in this week’s USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll released. South Carolina returns home this weekend hosting a three-game series with Alabama beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Carolina Stadium.

Dyson is only the third SEC pitcher to record a complete game shutout this year and the second this season to do it in SEC play.

Dyson finished with 69 strikes out of 96 pitches and allowed just one runner from Georgia to get in scoring position in the seveninning shutout. All 21 putouts by the Gamecock came from the diamond, as Dyson struck out five batters and recorded 14 ground ball outs. The win was the first complete game shutout of Dyson’s career. It helped clinch a series victory over Georgia, the first time since 2002 that the Gamecocks have won a series at Georgia.

With the win, Dyson moved into a tie for 15th on the all-time career victory list at Carolina with 21 career wins.

Dyson earned a second straight win in conference play and is now 4-2 with 4.35 ERA on the year. He has 53 strikeouts to just nine walks in 51.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just .259 against him on the year.

Newberry hires Dave Davis to coach hoops

Newberry College athletics director Brad Edwards introduced Dave Davis as the College’s 24th men’s basketball coach in a press conference on campus Monday. Davis had previously served as head men’s basketball coach at Pfeiffer University for the past 14 seasons.

Brice Zimmerman from WKDK in Newberry caught up with Edwards and Davis to get their thoughts on the hire.

In his 14 seasons at Pfeiffer, Davis accumulated a record of 284-124 (.696) including 21 championships, NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2000 and 2004 and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2004.

Davis’ Pfeiffer teams have averaged over 20 wins per season and rank in the top 5 in wins since 1990 in all of NCAA Division II basketball. Davis was named the CVAC Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2004. He was also named the NCAA East Regional Coach of the Year in 2004.

“When I talked to other athletic directors in the region, they said that if we could get Dave Davis at Newberry, it would be a coup,” Edwards said. “His energy is off the charts, he has a ton of fire and he is going to be a great Newberry guy.”

“It is absolutely an honor and a privelege to be your basketball coach at Newberry College,” Davis said at his introductory press conference. “I’m very excited and honored that Brad Edwards would trust me in this position. I am really looking forward to getting started. There are a lot of unanswered questions and we will be meeting with the team over the next two days to get those things figured out.”

Davis’ 2009-10 Pfeiffer team finished as the highest scoring team in Division II at 103.1 points per game and was ranked third nationally in three-pointers per game (10.6) and steals per game (11.2), while ranking fifth in the country in three-point field goal percentage (42.3%).

Prior to being named head coach at Pfeiffer, Davis was the head coach at Barton College where the team of his own recruits won a record 25 games. He received his first head coaching position at his alma mater, Warren Wilson College, where he led the Owls to their highest win total in 15 years.

All told, Davis has a record of 343-200 (.632) in 19 years as a collegiate head coach.

Davis earned his bachelor’s degree from Warren Wilson in 1983, and a master’s degree from Gardner-Webb in 1993. As a player for the Owls, he was a 4-year starter and was on two Conference Championship teams. He is Warren Wilson’s all-time assist leader.

Davis has an impressive list of former assistant coaches including seven Division I coaches, headlined by Purdue head coach Matt Painter, Charlotte associate head coach Rob Moxley, Charlotte assistant coach Rob Perron and Boston Celtics assistant coach Michael Longabardi.
