Another week kicks off on SportsTalk as we celebrate Passover.  Lots of football, baseball, and NCAA tourney talk.

  • Steve Spurrier talked to the media following Saturday’s spring practice.  Some of his other quarterbacks outplayed the guys expected to take most of the snaps.

Another honor for Downey

South Carolina senior guard Devan Downey has been named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press, the organization announced on Monday.

Downey was also named Honorable Mention following the 2008-09 season.

Downey concludes his career in the Garnet and Black with 1,901 points, including 699 during the 2009-10 campaign. He became South Carolina’s first-ever SEC scoring champion this season, posting an impressive 26.2 points per game in league play. Downey scored 20 or more points 19 times this season, and tallied 30 or more six times, including in five SEC contests. Downey concludes his career in the Garnet and Black No. 4 on the all-time scoring list (1,901), first in field goals attempted (1,634), in steals (277) and steals per game (3.0).

USC moves up in latest baseball polls

The red-hot USC baseball team has moved up to 12th in this week’s Baseball America poll. The Gamecocks have won 13 of their past 14 games. Coastal Carolina is 14th in the Baseball America ranking. Clemson is 16th. Virginia is the number one team.

Collegiate Baseball has Clemson 13th, USC 14th and Coastal Carolina 16th. The Citadel is 25th. Arizona State is the number one team in that poll.

USC will play host to the Citadel tomorrow night at 7:00 at Carolina Stadium. Clemson also has a big mid-week game this week, the Tigers will face Coastal Carolina Wednesday at 6:30 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Clemson hires Coleman as women’s hoops coach

Clemson Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips announced the hiring of Itoro Umoh Coleman on Monday as Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball program. Coleman, a 2000 graduate of Clemson who was named to the ACC’s 50-Year Anniversary Team in 2002, returns to Clemson after three years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Penn State.

 “When you look for someone in a leadership position, you look for someone who is wonderful fit for your program, and Itoro is an excellent fit for this program,” said Phillips. “She loves her university. We’re delighted that Itoro is with us, and we look forward to many years with her. Itoro was the individual that we wanted to come and lead this program back to where it was.”

“I am very passionate about re-establishing a winning tradition for the women’s basketball program. This is something I take very personally, because I am a product of this university,” said Coleman. “I want every Lady Tiger to have as great as experience as I did when I was here. I am committed to being the best, and I plan to work extremely hard to bring out the best in my players. I want to bring the same type of consistency and direction to the women’s basketball program that Coach Purnell has done with the basketball program, Coach Swinney has done with the football program, and not to mention the baseball, track, tennis and rowing programs, and I could go on and on. There is no staff that is going to out work my staff. There is no team that is going to outwork my team.”

Coleman has 11 years of experience as an assistant at the Division I level. She served as a student assistant coach at Liberty in 1999-00 and was an assistant coach at Butler from 2000 to 2002. From there, she worked for five seasons as an assistant under Jim Davis and Cristy McKinney at Clemson. She has spent the past three seasons at Penn State, who went 17-14 this season and made the WNIT this year.

“Just knowing what Itoro can bring to the table, knowing her passion for Clemson University, for Clemson athletics, her passion for young people, and developing young people to be the best that they can be academically, athletically, and as individuals,” said Barbara Kennedy-Dixon. “We have before us a very driven Clemson family member to come and take over our program, and to be competitive in the conference as well as beyond.”

Rain delays Martinsville race

Rain all Sunday afternoon forced NASCAR officials to call off Sunday’s running of the Sprint Cup race at Martinsville.  The race was rescheduled for a noon start on Monday.  It’s the second year in a row the spring race at Martinsville was pushed back a day due to rain.  Qualifying  also was rained out Friday so  the starting lineup was set by the points standings.
