Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney has received a 900 thousand dollar pay raise. Swinney is in the second year at running the Tigers ship and is coming of an ACC Atlantic divsion title last season. Swinney’s five-year contract has a base of $245,000 with $1,500,000 guaranteed outside income.
Swinney’s assitants also will be getting a bigger paycheck this fall. Defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is the highest paid assistant coach with an annual salary of $575,000. Steele turned down a job offer from Tennessee to remain with Swinney at Clemson.
As for the others on the staff, offensive coordinator Billy Napier was increased $75,000 to $275,000 annually and co-defensive coordinator Charlie Harbison received a $75,000 increase to $325,000 annually. Defensive line coach Dan Brooks received a $50,000 increase to $210,000. Offensive line coach Brad Scott $15,000 to $220,000, offensive line coach Danny Pearman $20,000 to $210,000, running backs coach Andre Powell $20,000 to $180,000, defensive line coach Chris Rumph $20,000 to $180,000 and receivers coach/recruiting coordinator Jeff Scott $20,000 to $130,000.
Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips released the following statement:
“We were pleased with the performance of the Clemson football program under Dabo Swinney this past season and feel the new salaries reflect these accomplishments, and give our program the opportunity to reach higher goals in the future. We won the ACC Atlantic Division Championship for the first time, finished in the top 25 of the Associated Press Poll, and the program is in good shape in all other phases, most importantly, academics.
“During the offseason a number of our coaches were pursued by prominent programs in other conferences. We feel it is important to have continuity within the staff. When Clemson won three straight ACC Championships from 1986-88, we had the same coaching staff all three years. When Florida State was among the top programs in the nation in the 1990s, it had consistency within its staff.
“The overall compensation for our coaching staff is well within the upper tier in the ACC.”
