Clemson won the opening game of the three game series with USC Friday night 4-3 in front of 6346 chilled fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. It’s the Tigers 3rd straight win over the Gamecocks and it improves their record to 8-o, their best start since the 2002 team opened 13-0. The Gamecocks fall to 5-3 with their third loss in four games.

Wilson Boyd’s two out RBI single in the bottom of the 8th prove to be the game winning hit. The Tigers trailed 3-2 after USC took the lead in the sixth. Clemson tied the game in the seventh on a two out single by Jason Stolz.

Clemson jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the first on homers by Chris Epps and Jeff Schaus off of Blake Cooper. Cooper then settled down and kept the Tigers off the board until the seventh. He went 6.2 innings allowing seven hits, three runs and striking out seven. Michael Roth worked an inning in relief and took the loss. Casey Harman started for Clemson and allowed eight hits and three runs over five innings. David Haselden pitched the final four innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three.

The series resumes Saturday at Fluor Field in Greenville at 2:00. Righthander Sam Dyson will start for USC. He’s 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA. Lefthander Will Lamb will go for Clemson. He’s 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA. The series concludes Sunday in Columbia at 2:00
